At the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event taking place in France, Samsung launched a series of new products, with the focus being the Galaxy Ring smart ring and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 foldable smartphone duo.
Galaxy Ring
The Galaxy Ring is a ring equipped with sensors that monitor health 24 hours a day. Samsung is entering a new market in the context of users becoming more "lazy" to upgrade their smartphones. Device manufacturers are looking for additional products to sell to customers.
For Samsung, the Galaxy Ring is the latest addition to its growing health-tracking lineup, which includes smartphones and smartwatches. Over the past few years, the South Korean company has been trying to market its health apps—which have become increasingly popular with consumers—as a major selling point for the device.
Samsung positions the Ring as a wearable device that can be used alongside smartwatches and smartphones, using artificial intelligence (AI) software to provide a comprehensive picture of a person's health, thereby helping to boost sales of other products.
Samsung says the Galaxy Ring can track sleep, including sleep movement, heart rate, respiration rate, and sleep quality analysis; menstrual cycles, using skin temperature to track; heart rate, notifying users when the heart rate is abnormally high or low; and exercise.
The Galaxy Ring weighs between 2.3 grams and 3 grams depending on the size and comes in three colors. The ring's battery lasts up to 7 days. A portable charging case is included. The device will be available on July 24 for $399.99.
Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6
The world's largest smartphone maker also introduced two foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. They are improvements over their predecessors and use the Galaxy AI suite of features. Some notable AI features include real-time call translation and quick response suggestions.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 starts at $1,899.99 and opens like a book. It has a 7.6-inch display when unfolded and a triple-lens camera setup on the back (a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization, a 10MP telephoto camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera). On the front is a 10MP selfie camera. According to Samsung, this is its thinnest foldable smartphone, measuring just 12.1mm thick when folded.
Compared to the Galaxy Fold 5, the Galaxy Fold 6 is 1.5mm shorter, 2.9mm wider, and 0.5mm thinner when opened. More importantly, it is 14g lighter, weighing 239g. The hinge has been redesigned. Samsung has also installed a 1.6x larger “vapor chamber” for better heat dissipation. The device is also certified for dust resistance according to IP48 standards.
The outer screen is 6.3 inches in size, while the inner one is 7.6 inches, both protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The device uses a 4,400mAh battery, supports 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse charging.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 comes in three storage options: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, all with 1GB of RAM.
Meanwhile, the Z Flip 6 has a similar design to a clamshell phone but has a bendable screen. However, these advantages come with a $100 price increase, starting at $1,099.99. The Z Flip 6 is lighter, thinner, more durable, and smarter than the Z Flip 5. It uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 12GB of RAM, and 256/512GB of storage.
The main camera has been upgraded to a 50MP sensor, while the 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera and 10MP selfie camera remain unchanged. The main screen uses a 6.7-inch LTPO (1-120Hz) panel, FHD+ resolution, and a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits.
Samsung has optimized the hinge to make the device thinner when folded. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 measures 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9mm when closed and 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.99mm when opened, weighing 187g. Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, the device is also IP48 dustproof. The battery capacity has increased from 3,700mAh to 4,000mAh, supporting 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging.
Both of Samsung's latest smartphones will be available starting July 24. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 will receive OS updates and security patches for seven years.
