The model of commercial snail farming in Do Xuyen commune, Thanh Ba district has brought high efficiency and has been replicated in many other communes in the area.
Nearly ten years ago, Mr. Cu Xuan Thu in Go Tram area, Tam Son commune, Cam Khe district visited a friend in Hung Yen province and was attracted by the model of raising commercial snails for high economic efficiency that his friend implemented. Learning from experience, he returned to his hometown to explore building a snail farming pond because this is a high-value livestock, with low initial investment capital, does not require a large area, simple feed costs and is easy to consume. With support from the district's Agricultural Extension Station for seeds and techniques, from 1 initial pond, his family has now built 13 ponds to raise meat snails and snail seeds. On average, each year his family sells about 1.5 tons of meat snails, over 1 million snail seeds, bringing in an income of more than 200 million VND.
Mr. Thu shared: Raising snails is easy, the snails' food is mainly duckweed, water fern and some agricultural by-products. However, snails are very sensitive to dirty water and changing weather, so during the farming process, farmers need to understand the techniques, closely monitor the growth and development of snails; regularly clean the pond, have appropriate stocking density, and feed enough nutrients so that the snails have full mouths, fat bodies, and high productivity. Especially in winter, snails "hibernate", seemingly inactive, at this time farmers need to spend time to renovate the pond and nurture snails for the next crop.
From Mr. Thu's model, many households in the commune and district have come to learn and implement the model. Mr. Thu happily shares his experience, provides technical support and provides quality seed to households in need. Up to now, the commercial snail farming model has been implemented by over 40 households in Cam Khe, contributing significantly to sustainable poverty reduction in the area.
The family of Ms. Le Thi Van in Zone 7, Dan Quyen Commune, Tam Nong District was supported by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center with 1,000 breeding chickens to build a VietGAHP colored-feather chicken farming model, linking cooperatives along the value chain. Thanks to technical support in care and disease prevention from agricultural extension officers, her family's chicken flock has grown healthily, with a survival rate of about 93% and an average weight of about 2.2-2.5 kg/chicken after more than 3 months of raising. With an average selling price of 85,000 VND/kg, her family has earned over 75 million VND after 3 months. Currently, her family and some other households participating in the model are raising 3 batches/year with a scale of 2,000 chickens/household or more, earning an income of over 400 million VND/year/household.
These are just two of many effective agricultural models that are being encouraged to be replicated in the province. According to Mr. Dang Ngoc Nga - Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in the coming time, the Center will continue to support people in implementing and replicating a number of models that have proven to be highly effective such as: Safe tea production; raising hill chickens, snails, eels, commercial sturgeon; growing red-fleshed dragon fruit, growing ophiopogon under the forest canopy; raising pigs using herbal feed, treating waste in raising chickens and pigs... Along with that, research and apply the model of commodity agricultural extension, according to the value chain. Promote consulting and agricultural extension services in providing input materials and equipment and solving output for products; linking agricultural extension activities with the new rural construction movement, vocational training for rural workers...
