The final match of the 24th Road to Olympia ended with a dramatic victory for Vo Quang Phu Duc (Math major student, Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted, Thua Thien Hue province). Phu Duc won 220 points, 5 points more than the runner-up.

“Win the bell” strategy

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Phu Duc said that his bravery and smart tactics were the two secrets that helped him win and win the laurel wreath.

“Toughness is maintaining form and mentality in the most important moments. Intelligence is calculating tactics at a very important moment. In important moments, people often have many emotions, and can make wrong calculations. This is something I feel quite successful in controlling well,” Duc shared.

Thanks to his stable mentality and spirit right from the start, Duc answered all 6 questions correctly in the individual round, the warm-up part. After that, he continued to gain more points in two questions in the general round. At the end of this round, Duc took the lead with 75 points.

Regarding the specific strategy, according to Duc, it is “bell grabbing”. In this, Duc chooses the safe option, not ringing the bell to gain the right to answer from the “finish” packages of the other contestants if he is not sure. This helps Duc preserve his current score.

“Before the last question, Nguyen Phu and I were 20 points apart. The strategy here is to fight for the answer, if the answer is correct then there is nothing to discuss, but if the answer is wrong then only 15 points will be lost. That is a strategy I experienced in the third quarter exam,” Duc added.

When winning the bell, Phu Duc shouted loudly in the studio to celebrate, amidst the cheers of the studio audience and Ngo Mon Square, Hue.

However, in the final answer of this contest, Duc also gave an incorrect answer. “I clicked on this question and the answer was 34.12%, but the answer was incorrect. I sincerely apologize to the math community,” Duc added.

Proud of this achievement after a year of hard work

The Olympia champion said he wanted this laurel wreath to be dedicated to his late grandmother. Before she passed away last year, her dream was to see Duc compete in Olympia on the S24 set.

“I went beyond that. That is something I really appreciate and this is my best match ever. I am proud of this achievement after a year of trying,” Duc said.

The male student from Thua Thien Hue added that his favorite part of the test was overcoming obstacles because he solved this obstacle quite quickly when the first question had just ended, without any hints.

Duc emphasized that he kept a relaxed and calculating mindset, thinking about things related to 2050, the year the answer mentioned.

“Net Zero is a fairly popular term, and young people are talking about it a lot these days. At the same time, Net Zero is also Vietnam’s goal of achieving zero net emissions by 2050. That’s why I respect this term,” the student added. It was thanks to this “daring” that Germany got an additional 80 points.

When asked about regrets in today's final match, Duc said that the regret question was the last question of his finishing line and if he had kept the first answer, maybe things would have been different but the match would have lost its appeal.

“When I answered the question ‘Storm Tree’, I turned around and saw Trung Kien starting to ring the bell. I was so agitated that I changed the answer to ‘Storm Tree’. It was a pity because I couldn’t have ended the game sooner,” Duc said.

The male student added that after winning this contest, his life will definitely change, but he is not sure exactly how and hopes to have some time to rest before thinking about what to do next.

Regarding his future plans, the male student majoring in National Studies also said he has not decided to study abroad yet, but if he studies in Vietnam, he plans to study artificial intelligence (AI).

Phu Duc is the 7th student of the school to enter the Olympia finals and the 3rd to win the laurel wreath. Before him, the two laurel wreath winners were Ho Ngoc Han in 2009 and Ho Dac Thanh Chuong in 2016.
