But the surprise lies in its price - a Margherita pizza from the world's best pizza restaurant costs just 7 euros (about 177 thousand VND). For four consecutive years, I Masanielli restaurant has topped the prestigious 'Top 50 Pizza' ranking.
The boss of I Masanielli is pizza chef Francesco Martucci, who has worked at 'Solito Posto', one of Caserta's oldest pizzerias, since he was 10 years old.
In 2001, he opened the first pizza shop 'I Masanielli' with his brother. Because the space was too small, the shop only served take-away customers at that time.
In 2017, I Masanielli moved to a new, much larger and more spacious premises, located in the heart of Caserta, about a 25-minute drive from Naples. The pizzeria is also just a short walk from the spectacular 18th-century Royal Palace of Caserta, once the largest palace on the planet.
A basic Margherita pizza costs just 7 euros, while a Bufala - Margherita with buffalo mozzarella cheese costs 9 euros.
However, Francesco Martucci became famous for his pizzas cooked at three temperatures. The pizzas at I Masanielli are steamed at 100°, then fried at 180° and finally baked in the oven at 400°.
The three-temperature method is applied to three signature pizzas. One is the 'Futuro di Marinara' with cream, roasted tomatoes, olives, anchovies, garlic sauce, capers and oregano. The other is the 'DOC' original Margherita pizza, with tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, parmesan and cherry tomatoes. Finally, the 'Genovese secondo Martucci'. This one is special, with a white base and fior di latte (fresh cheese made from mozzarella), onions, pork cheeks and 'conciato romano', the oldest cheese in the world.
Martucci told the Italian magazine, 'Identità Golose', that the pizza served at the restaurants bears his mark.
"I Masanielli's pizza has a personal identity that I have developed over many years. It is the result of my research and questioning myself day in and day out," Martucci shared.
I Masanielli restaurant has 4.5/5 stars on TripAdvisor, with over 3,800 reviews. Customers from all over the world say it's 'the best simple pie ever'.
