Every individual starts from small things, just like learning must start from the first letter o, a, ba, mom... with that meaning, Mr. Doan Manh Tan, at house number 9, alley 3, lane 95 Chien Thang street, residential group 10, Van Quan ward, Ha Dong district, ( Hanoi ) has been "fueling" the younger generations every day to spread the culture of reading books to children, improving knowledge and life skills for the future owners of each family.

Mr. Doan Manh Tan next to "Community Bookshelf"

Visiting Mr. Doan Manh Tan, at house number 9, alley 3, lane 95, Chien Thang street, residential group 10, Van Quan ward, Ha Dong district, Hanoi city, I could not help but be surprised by the "small things" of reading culture night for children. But the work he does every day to try to spread reading culture more and more widely in the community is not small at all... "Because each individual's life starts from small things, just like learning must start from the first letters o, a, ba, mom... That is spreading reading culture for children, a very meaningful work to improve knowledge and life skills for the young generation, the future owners of each family. Family is the cell of society, good family, and good community are the driving force and society develops quickly and sustainably", Mr. Tan confided.

Sitting and chatting happily over a cup of tea in the living room, which is also where the Community Bookshelf is located, Mr. Tan confided that he was born in Thanh Binh Thinh commune, Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh province. After graduating from high school, he attended the Geological College in (formerly Me Linh district, Vinh Phuc) now Me Linh, Hanoi. Due to his achievements in studying and training, he was honored to be admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam when he was still a student. After graduating from college, he went to work at the Physics - Geology Federation (under the General Department of Geology). During his years of working here, Mr. Tan always tried to complete the assigned tasks well and participated in cultural and artistic activities, studying to improve his professional qualifications to meet the assigned tasks.

As a result of his efforts, he graduated from the Trade Union College, the predecessor of the current Trade Union University, and graduated from the Labor Economics major at the National Economics University in Hanoi. In 1993, Mr. Tan was appointed as Director of the Geophysical Technology Company under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and retired in 2006 according to the regime.

Having a relationship with... "community bookshelf"

Sipping a cup of tea at the community bookshelf, Mr. Tan shared: “I have a family and children and grandchildren like today, all thanks to the process of learning, training and hard work of the whole family over the past many years. Among them, there is a positive role of books, newspapers and media. Through my life experiences, I see that books are the “friends” that always accompany the most and are the most valuable to every individual and family.

Mr. Doan Manh Tan introduces the "Community Bookshelf" located in his own home.

Indeed, books are an extremely large resource serving the needs of studying, working and nurturing human personality... Currently, the knowledge system is constantly changing and is transmitted in many rich, diverse and easily accessible forms, especially on the Internet environment. On cyberspace, there is a lot of knowledge about nature, society, literature, art... which is very useful and interesting. But besides that, the Internet also has potential dangers for the young generation. Therefore, in order to contribute to the development of reading culture for children and teenagers right in the residential area where Mr. Tan lives, he mobilized teacher Nguyen Quoc Thinh, lecturer at the University of Natural Sciences - Hanoi National University, Ms. Lai Tuyet Minh, Mr. Tran Duc Nhiem and some other members in the residential area to support books, working days, materials... to create the Community Bookcase today.

Up to now, the bookshelf has over 1,300 books, of which over 60% are books for children. When it first started operating, Mr. Tan saw that the number of children coming to borrow books was still "modest", only children in the Physics - Geology Area. To contribute to spreading the reading culture in the community, in July 2023, Mr. Doan Manh Tan proposed that the Party Cell and the Front Working Committee of Residential Group 10 convert the existing bookshelf into the Community Bookshelf of Residential Group 10 so that many children in the residential group can read books for free, this is also the passion of Mr. Tan's family members. Recognizing the kindness of Mr. Tan's family, the Party Cell, Residential Group, and the Front Working Committee of Residential Group 10 agreed to name it: "Community Bookshelf" in Residential Group 10, Van Quan Ward, Ha Dong. The bookshelf operates non-profit, always creating conditions for all members of the residential group and people who need to read books to borrow books to take home to read.

“In order for the bookshelf to develop and meet the needs of readers, it is necessary to have the attention and support of agencies, businesses and people who are passionate about reading culture to accompany and supplement the bookshelf with new publications. His family is always willing to contribute time and effort so that the bookshelf can be maintained and developed deeply and widely in the community. I hope that when individuals and families want to bring their children and grandchildren to borrow books, they should contact in advance via phone number 0913222758 so that the service is convenient and thoughtful,” Mr. Tan shared his wishes.

Looking at the innocent and excited faces of the children when they come here to borrow and return books, I realize more and more that Mr. Tan's family's work is meaningful and needs to be spread in the community.

As a resident of Residential Group 10, I know that Mr. Tan's children are all grown up and have stable jobs. And his children and grandchildren are very active in participating in charity activities in the community such as giving gifts to individuals and families with revolutionary contributions or families in difficult circumstances. Since the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, Mr. Tan's family has spent tens of millions of VND on social assistance activities. It seems that participating in charity activities has become an annual activity of his family.

Mr. Tan also confided to me that through books, newspapers and media agencies, he realized that burning votive paper is not good, is a waste of money, and even has the risk of causing fire and explosion... In fact, there are cases where burning votive paper causes fire and the disaster of "fire" is very heartbreaking. Since then, his family has not burned votive paper on holidays, New Year, or death anniversaries... His family will use this money to donate to charity activities in the community.

Mr. Doan Manh Tan's daughter and daughter-in-law are also active in social activities in the community - giving gifts to people with meritorious services in Residential Group 10, Van Quan Ward, Ha Dong in July 2023.

I suddenly calculated that this would probably be a huge resource to organize charity activities because according to Vietnamese tradition, every month on the 1st and 15th and on holidays, Tet... many families burn votive paper, even a lot. "If every family does not burn votive paper for a year on a national scale, the amount of money saved will be a lot of money, that amount of money can be used to build more schools, hospitals... in disadvantaged areas, support meals for children in remote areas with more meat, fish... contributing to improving the quality of life for children", Mr. Tan expressed.

Mr. Tan's small, useful actions in the community have increasingly spread and been appreciated by the people. At a rare age, Mr. Tan still continues to contribute to the community. I wish him and his family good health, happiness, and peace so that he can continue to do many charitable activities that benefit the community.
