After the results of the 2024 High School Graduation Exam were announced, To Thi Dieu (Quang Xuong 4 High School) became the valedictorian of Block C00 nationwide, with a score of 29.75 (including Literature: 9.75; History: 10.0 and Geography: 10.0). Dieu is also the only national valedictorian in Thanh Hoa province.

Since knowing the results, the small house of Dieu's family (in village 3, Quang Thai commune, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa province) has always been bustling with congratulations from relatives, friends and neighbors.

Sharing about her daughter, Ms. To Thi Nguyet (50 years old) said that Dieu was born into a family that was not as fortunate as her peers. When she was in 3rd grade, her father unfortunately passed away from a serious illness.

“After my husband passed away, I was extremely devastated, but I had to try to get back on my feet and work twice as hard to raise my children. To have money to pay for my living expenses and take care of my children, I did everything, from selling scrap, running errands, helping out at the market, helping out at a breakfast stall, helping out in the kitchen at a tourist area…” - Ms. Nguyet shared.

According to Ms. Nguyet, although she has to work hard and worry about everything, in return her children are very obedient and hard-working. Especially Dieu, she is very conscious in studying, always helping her mother with housework and tutoring her in studying.

So, every time she goes to work, she feels somewhat secure about her children. “Dieu is very studious, because many days after work, I am so tired after eating that I fall asleep, and when I wake up it is already a new day, but she is still studying. Looking at her thin and weak health, I feel so sorry, but in the end I can only advise her to go to bed early,” said Ms. Nguyet.

According to Ms. Nguyet, the day she heard that her child had achieved high results, becoming the valedictorian of the C00 block nationwide, she was working as a janitor and dishwasher for restaurants and hotels in Sam Son City. Immediately after that, she asked her employer to let her leave early to return home to her child. When they got home, mother and child hugged each other and cried happily without saying a word.

Choose teaching to avoid tuition fees

It is known that throughout 12 years of school, Dieu was an excellent student, having won the Second Prize in Literature for the whole province in the junior high school and the Encouragement Prize for the whole province in the high school. Talking about her favorite subject, Dieu said that since primary school, she liked Literature, and as time went on, this subject became more and more attractive to her.

In the last exam, for Literature, I did a total of 5 papers with 17 pages. When doing the test, I used all the knowledge I had. The test was long but I tried to make it as complete as possible and hoped to achieve the highest possible result.

As for the two subjects that scored 10 points, History and Geography, I was not too surprised by the above scores, because before that, when I looked up the official answers from the Ministry of Education and Training, I almost knew the results.

Talking about her favorite profession, Dieu said that since she was little, she loved seeing teachers standing on the podium and wanted to be like that in the future. As she grew older, her dream of becoming a Literature teacher became even more intense.

Also according to Dieu, recently, in addition to passing the competency assessment exam to Hanoi Pedagogical University, she also passed the pedagogical major of Da Nang University, Hue.

"My father passed away early, my mother worked hard to raise two children by herself, so I will choose to study pedagogy so I don't have to pay tuition fees, and help my mother with some of the burden" - Dieu said.

Talking about her student, Ms. Nguyen Thi He (homeroom teacher of class 12D1 - Quang Xuong 4 High School) said that when she heard the news that Dieu was the valedictorian, she was very happy and proud. Despite her difficult family circumstances, Dieu is a very good and studious student. "When we heard the news, all the teachers and friends congratulated her. Because she is the pride not only of the school but also of the whole country" - Ms. He shared.
