Stomach perforation due to abuse of painkillers for bone and joint diseases

Recently, the Department of General Surgery - Tam Nong District Medical Center announced that it had received and successfully treated a 38-year-old patient in Van Xuan, Tam Nong, Phu Tho who suffered from a perforated stomach due to taking too many painkillers.

Previously, the patient LDT had back pain so he went to see a doctor and received private treatment with both injectable and oral painkillers. However, later, the patient had abdominal pain and was taken to Tam Nong District Medical Center for emergency treatment in a state of abdominal cramps and severe abdominal pain above the navel.

Through clinical and paraclinical examination, the doctor diagnosed the patient with a perforated hollow organ and required immediate emergency surgery.

Dr. Dang Quoc Cuong - Head of the Department of General Surgery - said: The surgical team performed surgery to suture the perforated stomach, cleaned the abdominal cavity and used antibiotics to treat the patient's infection. Currently, the patient is awake, eating, drinking, walking normally and is expected to be discharged after a few days.

According to Dr. Cuong, there are two groups of causes leading to stomach perforation: benign ulcers and cancer. In which, benign ulcers are often caused by prolonged stress, use of painkillers containing corticosteroids, alcohol abuse, etc.

Currently, many patients taking medicine for bone and joint diseases often suffer from stomach pain and stomach ulcers due to the use of painkillers containing corticosteroids. Here, doctors said that they have treated many cases of patients with ulcers and stomach perforation due to the use of traditional medicine, Chinese medicine or bone and joint drugs mixed with corticosteroids.

Doctors recommend that people should pay attention when choosing appropriate medical examination addresses. Treatment of chronic bone and joint diseases is often long-term and requires careful advice from experienced doctors to avoid dangerous complications such as gastroduodenal ulcers, gastric bleeding, gastroduodenal perforation, which can be life-threatening.
