An Indonesian government official said President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka have outlined the country's development programs in the coming time, including the goal of building 15 million new houses for poor people nationwide.
Speaking to reporters on October 17, the head of the President-elect's task force, Mr. Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said the new government aims to build 15 million houses during its five-year term, meaning that 3 million houses will be completed each year to support the poor.
According to Mr. Hashim, the 3 million houses will include 1 million in urban areas and 2 million in rural areas. This policy will also create a number of new jobs for the society.
In Indonesia, thousands of poor people are living in areas without basic facilities such as clean water, electricity and internet. Therefore, the program to build new houses for people is one of the government's efforts to help people stabilize their lives.
According to Mr. Hashim, many aspects will need to be considered to realize the housing program, including finance, land acquisition, construction materials, permits and subsidies for target communities. Implementing these aspects will require not only conventional policies but also breakthrough solutions. The program to build 3 million houses per year is expected to meet the current housing needs of the people in the context of Indonesia's current housing shortage of about 12.7 million houses nationwide.
