In an interview with Breitbart News on September 19, Florida congressman Matt Gaetz condemned the assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump last weekend as a "tragedy" and "avoidable." He said that the security around the former president was not adequate to protect him from harm. Gaetz went on to claim that he recently met with a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official who told him that there were "at least five domestic groups that are targeting Trump." "Three of the groups we know are foreign. Two of them we know are domestic groups and that requires protection, which is not around the former president right now," Gaetz continued, noting that the foreign groups were linked to Ukraine, Iran, and Pakistan. Gaetz claimed that these groups were able to move freely in the United States because "there is not enough surveillance to stop them from doing so." In the past two months, Mr Trump has faced two assassination attempts. The former president narrowly escaped death at a Pennsylvania rally in July, when a bullet fired from 150 metres away grazed his ear. The gunman opened fire from a rooftop not protected by the Secret Service. The attack killed one Trump rallygoer and wounded two others before being shot dead by a sniper. The second assassination attempt took place at Mr Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, last weekend. A gunman who fired at Mr Trump from behind bushes was found and arrested by US Secret Service agents after fleeing the scene. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, had unsuccessfully tried to join the Ukrainian army in 2022, and then began a plan to recruit Afghan commandos to fight for Kiev. Routh was questioned by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents when he returned to the US later that year. According to Gaetz, agents found Routh's story suspicious as he was recruiting freedom fighters from around the world to fight in Ukraine. CBP referred Routh to the DHS investigative unit, which "refused to even investigate," Gaetz said. "They stopped him and let him into the country. And we have a lot of questions about that," the congressman asked. Given the possibility that two assassins could have approached Mr. Trump and put him in range, Gaetz said some of his Republican colleagues "wouldn't rule out the possibility that there was an agent within the Secret Service who could have provided information about high-risk, vulnerable points."Dantri.com.vn
