The U.S. Justice Department plans to charge a man who hid with a gun at former President Donald Trump’s Florida golf course with attempted murder of a political candidate. If convicted, the suspect could face life in prison.

Federal authorities want to charge Ryan Routh, who is accused of hiding a gun at former President Donald Trump’s Florida golf course, with attempted murder. If convicted, Routh could face life in prison. Routh was arrested on September 15 and appeared in court on September 23. He appeared in handcuffs and shackles at the waist before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ryon McCabe, where prosecutors said Routh wrote a letter months ago… …implying an “assassination plot” against the Republican presidential nominee and a $150,000 reward for Trump’s life. According to court records, Routh left a box at the home of an unidentified civilian witness several months before the incident.

One handwritten note read: “This is an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump, but I have failed everyone… I will pay $150,000 to anyone who can get the job done.” A lawyer for Mr. Routh argued that the letter was likely a publicity stunt. Prosecutors also said that Mr. Routh’s car had a handwritten list of dates in August, September and October where Mr. Trump had been or was expected to be. They added that Routh had set up a “sniper nest” near the sixth hole of former President Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course in an attempt to kill him, but was stopped by a Secret Service agent who shot him. Mr. Routh has so far been charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He has not yet pleaded guilty. After hearing from prosecutors, Judge McCabe ordered Routh held without bail pending trial on two gun charges. In a statement on September 23, Mr. Trump said the current charges against Routh were insufficient and amounted to “a light slap” to a “crazed killer.” The Florida incident came two months after another gunman wounded Mr. Trump in the ear at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
