People born and raised in different periods will have different ways of creating and enjoying art.

In 2014, in a music program on VTV, a singer-songwriter was “stoned” by the audience and older guests right after performing the song “ Going to School” . Although the musician and director explained that they wanted to create the song from the perspective of a father taking his child to school, they still could not calm the anger in the studio. They were upset because the familiar song was now arranged, interrupted… differently. Like a “knock-out”, they grabbed the mic and sang it again, as if to teach the singer and musician what is “Correct”.

The story of generational clashes in art appreciation is not a grand affair but happens right at every family meal. My grandmother always laments that the music of “that time” was all songs that touched people’s hearts, and were still good when listened to over and over again; whereas the kids today only sing “crazy and insane” songs, which are lost in the air after listening to them.

10 years after the collective “stoning” on television mentioned above, the station has made a huge step forward with “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai”. It can be said that for the first time on television, there is a music show that both young and old in the family can watch together. The participants are singers, actors, athletes… of all ages. Many viral songs from the show are remakes of immortal songs ( Mother loves child, Tinh anh ban chieu, Ao mua dong ) or built on folk material ( Drum rice, Dao lieu …). After the show, up to 20,000 viewers bought tickets to watch the live show to immerse themselves in the melodies once again. The next show in Hanoi is also being hunted by audiences for tickets.

The success of the program is not only to be at the forefront of trends, to elevate the careers of the participating faces, but also to affirm to the general audience the need to renew cultural products, so that they continue to exist in the flow of life. Insisting on forcing products to keep their original form is no different from killing them. Many people call for "setting the mold" with the mindset of preserving and protecting... but forget that culture is always about integration, learning and filtering. For example, the ao dai today has also gone through countless trials, improvements, and changes, not keeping version 1.0 like the Nguyen Lords. Or with Trinh's songs, young singers will not dare to touch them if the audience continues to think like: "Only Khanh Ly sings the best".

People born and raised in different periods will have different ways of creating and enjoying art. These are differences that need to be seen with empathy, not debated about superiority or inferiority; right or wrong. Vietnamese youth today are very good! They bring home famous stars (Blackpink, Charlie Puth...); organize shows with continental audiences ( Anh trai vu ngan cong gai, Anh trai "Say Hi" ...). Not only that, they also bring Vietnamese culture and music to perform on the world stage (Chi Pu, Trong Hieu, Lil Wuyn...). Now, the concept of "following idols" is also for Vietnamese singers instead of spending money to go abroad to watch shows of American, Korean idols...

As People's Artist Tu Long once said: "We make a traditional song or melody but need to have a fusion, combine with the contemporary, so that the elderly, middle-aged, and young people can all listen. What belongs to the nation, let's keep it, then develop, stylize, exaggerate and finally sublimate it."

Once again, young Vietnamese artists are very good! Please look at their creations with tolerance and allow national cultural products to carry the pulse of the times.
