Mr. Nguyen Huu Nghia, Chairman of Lai Vung District People's Committee, said that Nem making in Lai Vung district was born around 1960 and is one of the oldest traditional occupations in the locality, from a snack to a famous specialty of a region. The first person to think of and make Lai Vung Nem was Mrs. Nguyen Thi Man (Tu Man) in Tan Khanh Hamlet, Tan Thanh Commune, Duc Thanh District, Sa Dec Province (now Tan Khanh Hamlet, Tan Thanh Commune, Lai Vung District, Dong Thap Province).

Nem is mainly made by Mrs. Tu to worship on death anniversaries and Tet. Local people tried it and found it delicious, unique and could be preserved for a whole week, so many people were interested in learning from Mrs. Tu about making Nem and brought it to Lai Vung market to sell. Initially, Lai Vung Nem was only sold in small quantities in the markets, and was popular with many people, so Nem sold very well. Gradually, it followed the sellers to bus stations, ferry terminals and to all the provinces in the West.
