Nghe An will build a 3,100 billion VND waste-to-energy plant

VnExpressVnExpress04/03/2024

The waste incineration and power generation plant project has a total investment of 3,100 billion VND, expected to come into operation in 2027, processing 1,500 tons of waste per day.

The project was approved by the Standing Committee of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee at the end of February. The waste incineration plant is invested by Galax Joint Stock Company and built at Nghi Yen Solid Waste Complex, Nghi Loc District.

Once completed, the plant will treat domestic, industrial, normal and hazardous solid waste generated from Vinh City, Cua Lo Town, Nghi Loc, Hung Nguyen and Dien Chau districts.

The project is divided into two phases. Phase one has a total investment of VND 2,500 billion, expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2027, with a capacity to treat 1,000 tons of domestic solid waste, 3 tons of medical waste per day, and generate 20 MW of electricity.

Phase two has a total investment of 600 billion VND, expected to operate in the fourth quarter of 2030, treating 500 tons of domestic solid waste, recycling 6 tons of FE plastic and 3 tons of DO oil per day, generating 10 MW of electricity.

The project uses German mechanical grate technology combined with electricity generation. This technology is being used at a number of waste-to-energy plants in Vietnam because it is not picky about the type and size of waste.

Nghe An currently has no waste-to-energy plant. In 2023, the amount of domestic solid waste in the locality was more than 1,700 tons per day, but only more than 1,400 tons were collected, reaching 81%. Many districts are in a state of waste overload such as Quy Hop, Que Phong, Con Cuong...

According to the Department of Environmental Pollution Control, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment , Vietnam has 15 waste-to-energy plants that have been and are being built, the largest of which is the Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant in Hanoi with a capacity of 4,000 tons/day, total investment of 7,000 billion VND, operating from July 2022.
