Sad anniversary of Vietnam Feature Film Studio, headquarters in ruins

The 64th anniversary of the founding of Vietnam Feature Film Studio passed quietly, the studio's headquarters still deserted and dilapidated due to the prolonged scandal surrounding the equitization.

Vietnam Feature Film Studio (VFS) was established on December 7, 1959, the first product of revolutionary cinema was Chung mot dong song . On December 7, the film studio turned 64 years old.

However, the anniversary passed quietly, the studio headquarters remained deserted and dilapidated due to the long-standing controversy surrounding the equitization. Director Bui Trung Hai said that the artists at the studio were all depressed, no one wanted to celebrate the anniversary. The studio's directors, screenwriters, and cameramen made a living by doing all sorts of jobs.

Screenwriter Tong Phuong Dung said that she has had to write scripts for outside film production units for the past 6-7 years, because she has no income from Vietnam Feature Film Studio.

Cameraman Nguyen Viet Hung bitterly recalls the time of the equitization scandal.

“After the film studio was equitized, the work of the employees in the studio completely stagnated, each person running to a different place. In addition to professional difficulties, there were times when I had to work as a hired delivery man. Although I was still hired by some outside units to film, it was only seasonal work, unable to guarantee income,” said Mr. Hung.

Artists are heartbroken when the film studio headquarters on prime land is abandoned.

The 60th anniversary of the film studio (2019) was organized by the artists themselves at the headquarters at 4 Thuy Khue. It was also the most recent ceremony to take place here. Many veteran artists shed tears when witnessing the once golden address become a pile of ruins.

Four years ago, the cost of organizing the anniversary was initially contributed by generations of artists themselves, then with the help of a number of sponsors.

At the end of December 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST) also held a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Vietnam Feature Film Studio at the National Cinema Center. Generations of artists attended with mixed feelings. They prepared banners asking the Ministry to resolve the problem at the film studio once and for all.

In 2019, artists from Vietnam Feature Film Studio held their own anniversary celebration in a cramped, dilapidated space.

To date, nearly 8 years after the equitization of Vietnam Feature Film Studio, this process has not been completed and has caused much controversy. Artists continue to send petitions to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

In April, the Government Inspector General issued a decision to establish an Inspection Team to immediately inspect the implementation of the Inspection Conclusion on the equitization of Vietnam Feature Film Studio and to implement the Government's leadership's instructions on related issues. Up to now, more than half a year after the deadline, the problems at Vietnam Feature Film Studio have not been resolved.

"Everyone is waiting for the inspection results and the Government 's direction. This is an issue that the whole society is concerned about," said director Bui Trung Hai.
