What is the launching pad that helps students gain a global vision to become young leaders? What do you gain, what do you lose, and how do you build your brand as a young leader?

These interesting topics were discussed quite enthusiastically at the Global Citizens Day 2024 last weekend in Ho Chi Minh City. Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Thi Ngoc Thuy - Principal of Hoa Sen University - said that the most powerful launching pad to help a student accelerate on the journey of training to become a young global leader is to empower them to take ownership.

A young leader needs to be able to inspire, share ideas and attract like-minded people.

Mr. NGUYEN TIEN DUNG (Chairman of JCI Vietnam 2025)

What is a young global leader?

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung - elected president of the Federation of Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs in Vietnam (JCI) 2025, director of Era Pharma International Trade and Investment Joint Stock Company - said that global young leaders are not just a title or position but in someone's positive thinking, attitude and behavior.

Explaining, Mr. Dung said that this mindset is a sense of responsibility towards oneself, family and society, associated with the desire to create positive changes for society. Not to mention that young global leaders must spread energy, enthusiasm, and the most positive way of thinking to change the world to everyone.

Miss Vietnam Tourism 2008 Phan Ngoc Diem (president of JCI Vietnam 2019) asked the students present: "Do you want to become a young leader?". The unexpected question made many students hesitate, but some raised their hands to answer, saying they were on the journey to become a leader.

Through that small test, Ms. Ngoc Diem said that she used to think that she was young, inexperienced, afraid to give her opinion, afraid that making mistakes would affect others.

"That is the limit of belief that if you want to become a young global leader, you have to remove all those limits, you have to break down your own first barrier, have confidence in yourself because you still have the opportunity to allow yourself to make mistakes and have enough time to correct them," Ms. Diem expressed.

As a young leader, you have more opportunities to gain life experience, influence, achieve early success, and gain the trust of the community. These things help them create positive values for society.

"Despite many challenges, becoming a leader from a young age helps us to quickly recognize and limit mistakes as well as have the opportunity to correct them. Looking further is an opportunity to know how to set goals and take steps for our lives," Ms. Diem analyzed.

Hoa Sen University Principal Vo Thi Ngoc Thuy shared that she sees a Generation Z that is confident, dynamic, energetic and very creative. Ms. Thuy said it is important to help Gen Z students understand their strengths and weaknesses so that they do not become arrogant because of overconfidence.

According to Ms. Thuy, if you are too arrogant, it will be difficult for you to acquire new knowledge and values, and it will be even harder to see your own problems to reflect and proactively absorb and change them into a better version. "As soon as you can do that, students and Gen Z have taken a step towards becoming young leaders," Ms. Thuy said.

From her work experience, Ms. Thuy said she chose to empower students because many of them do not like to be led or guided. At that time, teachers, knowledge or confidence are just catalysts that act as a launching pad.

According to Ms. Thuy, it is the empowerment of project ownership that helps Gen Z have enough space and opportunity to liberate themselves.

Listening, student Le Thu Thuy (University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that being born and raised in peacetime with a life with a full learning and development environment is a blessing. However, Thuy said that fullness sometimes leads to many difficult problems that Gen Z must face and overcome.

There can be many different fears such as anxiety about personal identity crisis, uncertainty when mapping out a development path, peer pressure... "I choose to set goals for each month, each year, and the entire four-year university roadmap of what to do and what goals to achieve to create motivation to strive," Thuy said.

Three parts of a young leadership model

At the talk show "Advantages of youth in becoming a young global leader", there is a tentative conclusion that a model young global leader is divided into three parts. That person needs to identify, understand the good points, limitations and lead himself. Besides, he knows how to unleash the good points, correct the bad points, know his own value and limits.

When you can lead yourself, build a system of values, social beliefs, and work, it will certainly have an influence on one or more people, so you need to know how to call and connect others together. Choosing the right person for the right job will help your community develop and individuals mature.

It is important to understand the rules of the game and recognize the collective contributions higher than oneself. "Improving oneself, understanding oneself, understanding others and understanding the rules of the game to create a cohesive organization. That is the portrait of a young global leader," Miss Ngoc Diem shared her perspective.

Honoring 10 students who participated well in international activities

Within the framework of the festival, 10 outstanding students in international activities of Ho Chi Minh City were honored. They are typical examples of active participation in international exchange activities, contributing to enhancing the image of Ho Chi Minh City students internationally, and are also a dynamic image of the young generation with the spirit of learning, creativity and daring to face challenges, actively contributing to building the global community.

The festival also featured the final round of the "Youth Responsibility - Mission for Sustainable Goals" speech contest, sharing many positive messages. In the end, the joint first prize in the English category went to Trinh Quang Dong Thao (JCI South Saigon) and Nguyen Do Tuan Hung (JCI Central Saigon). Meanwhile, female student Pham Nhu Ngoc (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University) won the first prize in the Vietnamese category.
