VietNamNetVietNamNet11/07/2023

Nearly two-thirds, or 64%, of 5,101 American adults surveyed said they were “somewhat or very concerned” about TikTok’s data practices, according to the Pew report. Three in five, or 60%, saw TikTok as a national security threat. About one in five saw no threat from the Chinese app.

As of March 2023, TikTok was used by 150 million Americans.

Republicans and older adults were more likely to view TikTok as a threat, the report said. Among Republicans and Republican-leaning respondents, 70% viewed TikTok as a national security threat, compared to 53% of Democrats.

By age, about two-thirds of respondents aged 65 and older viewed TikTok as a national security risk, compared with 49% of those aged 18-29.

Pew conducted the survey in mid-May, just as Montana became the first US state to ban TikTok. TikTok has since sued to overturn the ban.

According to Insider , since 2020, US lawmakers have sought to limit the use of TikTok domestically. More than half of states have imposed some form of ban on TikTok on public devices. A March Pew study found that 50% of Americans support banning TikTok, while 22% oppose it.

In addition to concerns about data security and ties to China, TikTok has other issues related to child safety and the mental health of minors, as outlined in CEO Shou Zi Chew's testimony before the US Congress .
