On September 2, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced an optimistic forecast for the tourism industry in the last four months of 2024, when it is estimated that there will be about 12.22 million foreign tourists coming to the Land of Golden Pagodas, generating revenue of 652.826 billion Baht.

According to TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the number of tourists is expected to increase by 20% compared to the same period last year, generating revenue of 652.826 billion baht, up 29%. This is a positive signal for the Thai tourism industry, showing a strong recovery after the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tourists from key markets such as China, Malaysia, South Korea, India, Russia, Laos, Singapore, Taiwan (China), Japan and the United States contributed to the increase in arrivals. Supportive policies such as easing visa requirements, extending the length of stay and waiving entry declarations have facilitated international visitors.

In addition, the end of the year also sees many major festivals such as China's National Day, Christmas and New Year, which significantly increase the number of visitors. The development of tourism trends inspired by influencers and famous artists also contributes to attracting tourists to Thailand. This country has become an ideal destination for entertainment events and content creation.

Despite the positive signs, the TAT believes that Thailand’s tourism industry will face many challenges. Competitors in the Asia-Pacific region such as Japan, South Korea and Vietnam are actively implementing promotional programs to attract tourists similar to Thailand.

In addition, global economic uncertainty and the risk of recession in some major economies could affect tourism demand. Prolonged international conflicts could lead to increased airfares, hampering the tourism industry.

However, the optimistic forecast for international tourist arrivals in Thailand in the last four months of 2024 will not only help raise the total number of international arrivals in 2024 to nearly 36 million but also surpass the previously set target of 35 million.

This is a positive signal for the country’s tourism industry. To maintain growth momentum, Thailand needs to continue improving service quality, strengthening support policies and flexibly responding to challenges from the international environment. The recovery of the tourism industry not only contributes to economic development but also affirms Thailand’s position on the world tourism map.
