Kinhtedothi - Although facing many difficulties and challenges, the coffee industry in Dak Nong province will implement the European Union's regulations on agricultural products against deforestation (EUDR).

On 29 June 2023, the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council of the European Union on the control of the import and export of goods and products linked to deforestation and forest degradation was adopted.

This regulation prohibits the import of agricultural products produced on land originating from deforestation and forest degradation after December 31, 2020, including livestock, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soybeans and timber, as well as products raised or produced using such products.

The EUDR has been extended by the European Union to take effect from January 2026, and for small businesses it will be applied from June 2026. The time to comply with the EUDR regulations has been extended by another year. This is also an opportunity for the Vietnamese coffee industry in general and Dak Nong province in particular to have more time to prepare.

International delegates, ministries and branches attended the workshop in Dak Nong.

Dak Nong province has the third largest coffee area in the country after Dak Lak and Lam Dong, with 140,000 hectares. Coffee accounts for 37% of the province's cultivated area, with an output of 360,000 tons/year. Dak Nong has 400,000 people participating in coffee production.

The current challenge of Dak Nong province is that the coffee area in the area is large, while most farmers only produce on a small scale. The province also does not have a database for each lot, plot, or origin tracing system.

In addition, products, especially agricultural products, brought to market and exported to buyers around the world increasingly require compliance with many requirements, including the requirements of the European Union Deforestation Regulation, EUDR.

Realizing that importance, Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee has directed all levels and sectors to urgently organize and implement and initially achieved certain results.

Specifically, Dak Nong province has issued an action plan framework for adaptation to EUDR and established a provincial public-private working group to implement the action plan framework for adaptation to EUDR. Dak Nong has directed departments, branches and localities to strengthen propaganda, dissemination and develop plans to organize and implement EUDR regulations.

Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dak Nong province reported on the production status and solutions to promote the development of the coffee industry in Dak Nong province.
