The penetration of electronic cigarettes among young people is not a new topic, but it is always a hot topic, because of the consequences that this stimulant leaves for users, especially when the number of cases of poisoning students due to electronic cigarettes shows signs of increasing.
Hospitalized for electronic cigarettes
Recently, hospitals in the province have treated many cases of students poisoned by e-cigarettes. Although not life-threatening, they clearly affect mental health.
We met VBN and NTQ at the Emergency Department of the Provincial General Hospital when they had just woken up after nicotine poisoning and were given emergency treatment by doctors. The 17-year-old boy's face was full of fatigue and shock, unable to hide his feelings of shame when the doctor asked about his condition before being admitted to the hospital.
VBN shared: After smoking e-cigarettes for about 1 hour, both of them felt dizzy, nauseous, vomited, sweaty and short of breath, unable to control their breathing, and their limbs were weak. Both of them had known about e-cigarettes for a long time but did not use them regularly. This time, when they first used them, they felt like that.
Previously, in April 2023, 4 students, only 15 years old, were also hospitalized at Bai Chay Hospital in a state of dizziness, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, and weak limbs. NCN, one of the 4 victims, after being diagnosed with nicotine poisoning due to smoking e-cigarettes, mumbled, "I just tried it, I didn't expect to be hospitalized like this."
According to doctors, the main ingredient in e-cigarettes is mainly nicotine. This is a highly addictive substance, causing users to become dependent and may turn to other nicotine-containing products, such as cigarettes, even synthetic drugs...
"E-cigarette poisoning often occurs in middle and high school students and adolescents, because this is the age when the brain is still developing and is easily affected by stimulants. Moreover, children at this age also have the need to express themselves and try new feelings," said specialist doctor I Nguyen Tien Thang, Deputy Head of the Emergency Department, Provincial General Hospital.
Nicotine in e-cigarettes is also the cause of many later consequences, directly affecting the health of users. According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thoa, Head of the Cardiology Department, Provincial General Hospital, recently, the number of young people suffering from cardiovascular diseases has increased, one of the causes is also from the use of stimulants such as alcohol, beer, cigarettes, especially e-cigarettes.
Strengthening treatment measures
Faced with the consequences that e-cigarettes leave on users, especially young people, and with the complicated and increasing situation of drug crimes "disguised" as food, drinks, herbs, e-cigarettes, etc., implementing the direction of the Ministry of Public Security, the Provincial Police and the local Police have advised the People's Committees at all levels to strengthen propaganda work, proactively grasp the situation, detect and combat this type of crime.
A series of violations related to illegal trading and transportation of electronic cigarettes have also been discovered here.
According to statistics from Ha Long City Police, from April 20 to May 15, 2023, professional teams, ward and commune police discovered and handled 13 violations related to laughing gas, electronic cigarettes, shisha, and seized many exhibits, including 1,336 electronic cigarettes, 334 bottles of essential oils, 83 accessories containing essential oils, 101 accessories for electronic cigarettes, 4 Vape tools, and many other related tools.
Notably, on May 15, 2023, the authorities inspected and discovered that The Vape Shop business location at No. 30, Phu Gia 4, Hong Gai Ward (Ha Long City) was blatantly selling thousands of electronic cigarettes and accompanying tools, while the representative of the establishment could not present a business license, invoices, or documents related to the above goods.
Not only Ha Long City, in a remote district like Dam Ha, on May 10, the district police also discovered 2 subjects delivering a total of 4 e-cigarettes to others for the purpose of making a profit. In addition, these subjects also voluntarily delivered a total of 185 e-cigarettes without invoices or documents proving their origin, which were stored for sale to users.
To proactively detect, prevent and handle the above situation, propaganda work on the harmful effects, how to recognize them, thereby forming the habit of staying away from e-cigarettes and other addictive substances, is given great attention by the police force.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Do Dinh Thach, Deputy Chief of Dong Trieu Town Police, the town police have directed professional teams, with the Drug Crime Investigation Police Team as the core, to coordinate with the police of communes and wards to grasp the local situation, detect businesses trading in laughing gas, electronic cigarettes, mixed drugs, especially conditional businesses, and school gate areas to arrest, handle and deter. And from there, use this as material for propaganda to improve the effectiveness of education and general prevention.
Need to improve sanctions
Although the authorities have implemented many measures from propaganda, mobilization to handling violations, however, electronic cigarettes still infiltrate daily life, especially among students. Handling violations related to electronic cigarettes is like "kidnapping and abandoning the plate", when the demand of users still shows signs of increasing.
Currently, many countries in the world have banned the use of e-cigarettes, such as in China, e-cigarettes have been banned since October 2022.
Meanwhile, in Vietnam, e-cigarettes are still in circulation, there is no ban and there are no strict management measures or sanctions that are strong enough to deter the illegal buying, selling, transporting, and organizing of e-cigarettes. This will lead to many complicated problems to be faced in the future.
Faced with that situation, according to the recommendation of Dr. Tran Thi Hong Ngan, Department of Nephrology and Dialysis, Bai Chay Hospital, parents need to care and pay attention to their children, especially unusual signs in children such as: Often in a state of drowsiness, slowness, lack of concentration, babbling... need to contact a doctor or psychologist for early examination and treatment.
I think that propaganda should not only come from the authorities, but also from families and schools, who always accompany children, who need to participate more strongly. Give minors the right attention and education so that they understand the serious harms of electronic cigarettes, avoid negative effects on health, and especially stop the risk of getting involved in unfortunate social evils when they are deeply involved in stimulants and addictive substances.
