Forecast of future Australian dollar trends

The Australian dollar had a dismal 2023 compared to the USD, the world's 10th strongest currency. In September 2023, the Australian dollar hit a 10-month low, after falling steadily in the previous months.

Employment in Australia increased by just 0.5 thousand people in January 2024, after falling by 62.7 thousand people in December 2023, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said. The unemployment rate rose to 4.1% and the labor force participation rate remained unchanged at 66.8%.

The market had previously forecast a more optimistic 30,000 jobs were created and the unemployment rate rose to 4.0% from 3.9%. As a result, the ABS noted that more unemployed people were expected to start work in the next four weeks than usual, which would have increased the unemployment rate, and weighed on the Australian dollar.

“This is a disappointing report overall despite some seasonal issues. The labour market continued to loosen in January,” said Gareth Aird, an economist at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

“AUD/USD eased slightly to around 0.6485 after a weaker-than-expected Australian labour force survey prompted markets to accelerate expectations of a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rate cut,” said Aird’s other colleague, foreign exchange strategist Carol Kong, also at Commonwealth Bank.
