President Biden signed the bill just hours before the midnight deadline of September 30. This temporary budget bill will allow the government to continue operating until November 17.
Earlier in the day, in a last-minute effort to avoid a partial government shutdown, the US House of Representatives passed the bill with 335 votes in favor and 91 votes against. The bill, proposed by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, would fund the government for 45 days but does not include additional aid for Ukraine.
If the bill fails to pass Congress, the U.S. government will partially shut down at exactly 12:01 a.m. on October 1. Federal agencies have even drawn up detailed plans, outlining which federal activities will continue or stop.
To prevent a government shutdown, the US legislature and executive branch have approved a temporary spending bill that does not include aid to Ukraine.
