As part of its deployment in Southeast Asia, the Russian Navy's new Kilo II-class attack submarine Ufa conducted joint PASSEX exercises with the Malaysian Navy in the South China Sea.
On November 26, the Zona-militar military news site quoted a statement from the Russian Navy confirming that the diesel-electric submarine Ufa, escorted by the Pacific Fleet's rescue tug Alatau, had completed an official visit to Malaysia's Kota Kinabalu port and conducted the above exercise.
The crew of the Ufa also held meetings with the Malaysian Navy to enhance cooperation.
Ufa, a third-generation diesel-electric submarine, is the fourth of six Kilo II-class submarines to enter service.
The submarine has a displacement of about 3,900 tons, a length of 74 m, and an estimated range of 7,500 nautical miles, with the ability to dive to a depth of 300 m. The Ufa is notable for being equipped with modern Kalibr-PL cruise missiles and a variety of torpedoes, including ASuW 53-65 and ASW TEST 71/76.
* Also on November 27, Bernama news agency reported that Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said that the country is committed to resolving disputes in the East Sea constructively through diplomatic channels and appropriate forums.
Speaking in the Malaysian Parliament, Mr. Mohamad said that, as the coordinator of the ASEAN-China dialogue from August 2024 to July 2027, Malaysia will continue to affirm its firm stance in protecting maritime security, while emphasizing that all parties must avoid actions that cause tension and exercise restraint.
According to the Malaysian diplomatic official, the Code of Conduct (COC) of the parties in the East Sea needs to be respected by all ASEAN member states and China, the parties that signed the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) in 2002.
* Regarding the East Sea, on the same day, International Affairs magazine reported that the Philippines held the first Manila Dialogue forum in early November, bringing together experts from the Indo-Pacific region, North America and Europe to discuss the rules-based order in the East Sea.
Notably, this is the first time that both Philippine and Chinese delegates are participating in such a forum in the Philippines, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in easing tensions in the region.
