According to RT news agency, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned on November 16 that Russia could completely sever diplomatic relations with the US. Moscow emphasized that although Russia wants to avoid this, such a scenario could happen if the US continues its confrontational policy.
In a statement issued on November 16, marking the 90th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Soviet Union, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the relationship "is in danger of being severed again at any moment."
Moscow blames this on US policy of escalating tensions and on America's pursuit of the goal of defeating Russia.
Moscow believes that Washington is increasingly determined to pursue a policy of containment towards China and Russia, in a futile attempt to reverse the current trend towards multipolarity.
Earlier, on November 9, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov also warned that US moves could force Moscow to downgrade diplomatic relations or even sever ties.
“If I look at Washington’s current behavior from this perspective, I do not rule out any scenario. The scenario of downgrading or severing relations is possible,” Ryabkov said.
"The two sides are really experiencing a serious crisis in relations, something we have never seen before. The two countries need to correct and be careful with their steps to prevent further escalation," the diplomat stressed.
Russia still hopes that future US leaders will adjust policy towards Russia "based on respect and taking into account mutual interests."
