On its Telegram page, the Russian Defense Ministry announced: "According to the decision of the President of the Russian Federation, the third stage of the non-strategic nuclear forces exercises has begun."

This stage is aimed at maintaining the readiness of personnel and equipment of Russian non-strategic nuclear weapons units to perform combat missions.

According to the ministry, soldiers from the southern and central military districts will be trained to deploy dummy warheads for the Iskander-M tactical and operational missile systems and secretly move them to launch sites.

Russia held the first stage of the exercises in May and ally Belarus joined in the second stage last June.

Russia has accused the United States and its European allies of pushing the world to the brink of nuclear confrontation by supplying Ukraine with billions of dollars worth of weapons, some of which are being used to attack Russian territory.

Since the start of a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that Russia could use nuclear weapons to defend itself in extreme situations.
