Employment rate is higher than some other industries
Present at the online TV program Choosing a major for the future: Tourism and service sector organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of March 12, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quyet Thang, Vice President of the Vietnam Tourism Training Association, Head of the Department of Tourism-Restaurant-Hotel Management, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that by the end of 2023, Vietnam tourism will welcome 12.6 million international visitors, 3.4 times higher than in 2022 and far exceeding the target set at the beginning of the year of 8 million.
"The tourism industry has accelerated after the pandemic. The growth rate of the tourism industry until 2030 will be very fast, especially from the second half of 2024 to 2025 onwards, there will be an explosion. Vietnam is one of the countries with a high growth rate. One of the requirements is to train human resources to serve the tourism industry, which is very urgent at present," Associate Professor, Dr. Thang commented.
International tourists to Vietnam are increasing
According to Mr. Thang, through a survey in the past 1-2 years, the rate of tourism students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology having jobs is 88-90%, higher than some other majors. Many students have part-time jobs in their major right from their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years and after their internship, they are retained by businesses to work.
"You not only work in travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, airlines... but also in other businesses with departments related to foreign affairs and international relations such as receptionists, customer care departments, international relations departments... Or work at tourism departments, tourism promotion centers...

Ms. Ngo Thi Quynh Xuan, Principal of Saigon College of Tourism, also shared: "Vietnam tourism is very vibrant, Ho Chi Minh City alone leads the country and is recognized as the top tourist destination in Asia. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many employees in the tourism industry to switch to other careers, so now is a great opportunity for those who love this industry. You only need to study at college for 2.5 years to be able to participate in the labor market."
Advantages of having a second language
According to Dr. Ha Thi Thuy Duong, Head of the Tourism Department of Ho Chi Minh City Open University, there are 3 groups of necessary factors that those studying and working in the tourism field need to meet: First, they must have in-depth knowledge of tourism, culture, and society.
Second is to have a positive attitude, a spirit of progress, overcoming difficulties, an extroverted, dynamic, open-minded personality and especially a passion for the profession.
Third, you must be good at foreign languages. Besides English, students should learn a second foreign language such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese or French depending on market demand and the number of international visitors to Vietnam.
"Tourism is a challenging and extremely interesting field. If you meet the above three factors, you will have a great advantage and be given priority in recruitment," said Dr. Thuy Duong.
The chef profession has a high income at a time when the food service, hotel and restaurant industry is growing strongly.
Master Ngo Thi Quynh Xuan also emphasized that to work successfully, workers need to be good at their profession first. "In terms of income, if a domestic tour guide has a salary of 500,000 VND/day, then someone who knows a rare foreign language can earn up to 60 USD/day. A chef also has a very good income, with a salary of 15-16 million VND/month and if you are a head chef, the salary is from 18-40 million VND/month depending on the size of the business. Depending on your interests and strengths, you can choose to be a tour guide or a chef," Master Quynh Xuan shared.
According to data provided by experts in the program, currently, the tourism industry's human resources have a rate of university training of 10%; college, primary and secondary training of 50%. Currently, the world's major hotel groups are present in Vietnam, continuously looking for human resources after the Covid-19 pandemic. In the hotel and restaurant industry, the market can only meet 70% of the demand.
