"An elegant education, aiming at international standards, can create civilized, elegant, and integrated people in the capital," the minister emphasized.

The 70th anniversary of Hanoi's education and training sector took place on the morning of November 12 at the National Convention Center.

The 7-decade journey of "improving people's knowledge - reviving people's spirit - nurturing talents" of the capital's education sector was emotionally recreated in the ceremony.

70 years ago, in October 1954, tens of thousands of Hanoians welcomed the victorious army back home. That was also the time when the capital's education and training sector was "born".

According to the report of the Director of the Department of Education and Training, Tran The Cuong, at that time, nearly 90% of the population in Hanoi was illiterate, but there were only 96 primary schools and 4 secondary schools, meeting the needs of 20% of the children going to school. The remaining 80% were mainly children of the working class who were illiterate.

In the conditions of lacking teachers, lacking schools, lacking desks, chairs, paper, pens, oil lamps, teachers and students studying in dilapidated thatched houses without walls, in the winter the wind and rain chilled the skin, the whole of Hanoi was still bustling and full of the desire for knowledge.

During the years of the war against America, Hanoi schools had to be evacuated to the suburbs. Many Hanoi teachers had to say goodbye to chalk and blackboards to go to war. According to statistics, the number of Hanoi teachers who went to battlefield B was 1,483. More than 200 of them never returned.

After peace was restored, Hanoi fundamentally and comprehensively innovated education and training with the aim of building a developed education system that meets the requirements of the cause of building and defending the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.

Hanoi was the first locality to complete universal primary education in 1990 and universal lower secondary education in 1999.

In 2008, Hanoi's administrative boundaries were expanded, leading to Hanoi's educational scale becoming the largest in the country with nearly 2,600 educational institutions from preschool to high school and nearly 1.8 million students.

After 16 years of merger, Hanoi education has maintained its leading position in the country in key education and talent training. Hanoi students have won 2,200 prizes in national competitions for excellent students and 200 medals in major international competitions in mathematics and natural sciences.

At the event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding, the head of the capital's education sector expressed gratitude to generations of teachers, parents and people from all walks of life on the journey of knowledge, helping generations of students.

Mr. Tran The Cuong quoted the direction of General Secretary To Lam to talk about the goal of developing the capital's education and training career in the new era: "Taking people as the center, the subject, the goal, the driving force and the resource of development; paying attention to the issues of time, intelligence, aspiration, potential, and integration to bring education and training on par with and keep up with developed countries with the spirit of autonomy, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-strengthening, and national pride".

Also at the ceremony, the Hanoi education sector was awarded the First Class Labor Medal. 56 teachers were awarded the titles of People's Teacher and Excellent Teacher by the President.
