Binh Dinh To dredge Quy Nhon port, the company built a temporary storage area in the middle of the river before moving it to the dumping site, causing a 300 meter long stretch of river to be surrounded by mud and sand.
The port dredging project on Truong Uc River was approved by Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee in February 2023. The entire project covers an area of nearly 190,000 m2, of which the dredging area of the water area and turning basin is more than 170,000 m2. The dredged volume is more than 500,000 m3, the main components are sand (70%) and mud (30%).
Quy Nhon Port Joint Stock Company (investor) and Phu Gia Riverside Company mobilized many machines and barges to carry out the project. After dredging, the enterprise brought the mud and sand to a temporary storage area in the riverbed area before pumping it to two 17-hectare dumping sites in the new urban area of Cho Goc area of Phu Gia Riverside Company.
By October 31, Quy Nhon Port Joint Stock Company had completed the project and cleared the exploitation and transportation equipment, but the river section in this area was covered with mud and sand. This made it impossible for people to fish, potentially affecting aquatic resources. Recently, mud and sand have also blocked flood discharge.
Upon inspection of the scene, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment determined that the sedimentation had two main causes. First, the formation of a temporary storage area in the middle of the river partially obstructed the flow, causing sedimentation above. At the same time, the construction and operation of settling ponds at the dumping site were ineffective, causing a large amount of sludge from the settling ponds to overflow into the river.
The People's Committee of Binh Dinh province directed Phu Gia Riverside Company to reinforce and upgrade the ponds at the dumping site, ensuring that no mud escapes and causes sedimentation downstream. The relevant companies will coordinate to dredge all the sediment on the river and pump it to the dumping site before January 15, 2024.
Before December 15, the enterprise needs to complete dredging the channel with a width of nearly 50 m right after the Quy Nhon 3 spillway gate to the intersection with Truong Uc River to ensure flood drainage.
