Winning 20 Math and Physics competitions, Anh Minh wants to pursue Business and was accepted into many top American universities when talking about his passion for perfume.
At the end of March, Trinh Anh Minh, a 12th grade Physics 1 student at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, received a series of acceptance letters from American universities. Among them, many top schools, according to US News, such as the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in the top 15, Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (top 21), North Carolina - Chapel Hill (top 22), Virginia (top 24)...
As Minh's advisor during the process of preparing his study abroad application, Ms. Phan Le Hang Giang, a graduate student at the University of Virginia, USA, said that his passion for perfume was a highlight in the male student's application.
"The good thing about Minh is that he knew what he liked early on, so he had time to experience and develop it. This makes his profile much more convincing," said Ms. Giang.

The student born in 2006 said he has been interested in the scent of perfume since grade 6-7, so he has researched many types and brands of perfume.
Minh had a "deal" with his parents. Every time he got good results, his parents would let him buy something he liked, and Minh always chose perfume. By the time he was in 9th grade, he realized he couldn't keep asking his parents for support, so he decided to start a business.
From the perfume bottles I already have, I decant them into smaller bottles and then resell them to those in need in online groups. Minh's decanted bottles are mainly 5-10 ml, but to "get a better price", I often keep 30-40 ml in the original bottle to sell with the packaging. After two months, Minh earned 7.5 million VND.
This experience made Minh realize that perfume is similar to marketing. The three layers of fragrance are similar to the values in this field. The first layer is what the user smells when using it, just like the customer sees what the marketing campaign is talking about. The second layer is similar to the value of the product, which needs to be experienced to be understood and evaluated; and the base layer is the last thing that remains, which Minh compares to the value of service - the thing that can make a person buy again.
"The process of developing my passion for perfume made me certain that I wanted to pursue business in college," Minh said.
As a student majoring in Physics, Minh found writing an essay a big challenge. He said that completing an essay required a rich vocabulary and flexibility in expression, while these were not his strengths. Although the story was still about his passion for perfume, Minh had to write and edit it dozens of times.
"The first drafts were very boring. But little by little, with each draft, I adjusted the sentences and expressions so the song gradually became more complete," Minh said.

In addition to capital turnover, profits from the perfume business help Minh have money to participate in projects and extracurricular activities. In grade 10, Minh implemented the Thuong Em project, supporting disadvantaged students in Moc Chau, Son La province. Minh and his friends bought school supplies, organized fun activities and repainted dilapidated classrooms in 5-6 schools. At the same time, the male student supported boarding meals for more than 10 students in the highlands, through the Nuoi Em fund.
Since elementary school, Minh has won more than 20 awards in natural science competitions, such as gold medals in the International Junior Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO), International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), platinum prize in the Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad (APMOPS), first prize in the city's excellent students in grades 9 and 11 in Physics... Therefore, when he switched to pursuing business, Minh received many questions about the consistency of his study abroad application.
Minh believes that maintaining good grades in natural sciences shows that he is a persistent person with academic ability. This also helps Minh develop scientific and logical thinking - which is very necessary in business. Not to mention, understanding a specific field helps him have a foundation to develop more business in that field.
"For example, if I study Physics, I can do business in materials and techniques. In pricing perfume bottles, calculating capital and profit ratios, I also apply a lot of mathematical knowledge," Minh shared.
To make his application more competitive, Minh challenged himself with a scientific research on Micro Finance - financial services for low-income people. The Ams student raised the issue of using technology to develop this service in Vietnam.
During the research process, Minh accessed many documents, gained a deeper understanding of financial principles as well as some financial characteristics in Vietnam. After nearly a year, Minh completed the initial research and is about to publish the results in some scientific journals.
For Minh, the most stressful time is the second half of 2023. At that time, he has to complete standardized tests, organize extracurricular activities, and apply for studying abroad. Minh has to limit the time he spends playing soccer, guitar, and piano, but he doesn't give it up completely, because he still needs to relax.
Ms. Hang Giang commented that Minh is smart and sharp when skillfully combining his achievements and experiences. Minh has this because he truly loves what he does, not just to look good on his study abroad profile.
In life, Minh is talkative, dynamic and easily connects with people. "Minh is really suitable for the business field," said Ms. Giang.

Minh will begin his first semester in the US in August this year. He is considering the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor because it is one of the top 4 schools in the US for this field.
Minh will also research and study some specialized content in advance to catch up with the curriculum better. If possible, I want to continue pursuing perfume projects.
"This passion has contributed greatly to helping me study abroad in the US, so I also want to carry out a perfume startup project in the future," Minh revealed.
