Hanoi Kien, a 7th-grade student at Dai Dong Secondary School, was repeatedly beaten by his classmates and had to be hospitalized due to psychological trauma.

On the evening of October 25th, a video of a male student being beaten by a group of students in Hanoi went viral on online forums. In the video, the victim is seen crouching in a corner of a hallway while five other male students take turns punching and kicking him repeatedly in the head and stomach. The student being beaten does not fight back, only cries and covers his head.

Speaking to VnExpress , Mr. Do Cong Duc, Principal of Dai Dong Secondary School in Thach That District, said that the incident in the video occurred in mid-June at the Dong Cau village cultural center during the students' summer vacation. Kien, the victim, and the other male students appearing in the video are all 7th-grade students at the school.

"I only just found out about this video and don't dare watch it a second time. It's a very heartbreaking incident," Mr. Dực said.

According to Mr. Dực, this wasn't the first time Kiên had been beaten. In mid-September, Đại Đồng Secondary School discovered that this group of male students had committed similar acts against Kiên right at the school.

Kien subsequently required 10 days of treatment for psychological trauma, frequently exhibiting signs of dazedness and lack of concentration. He returned to school in mid-October but his mental state remained unstable. The group of eight male students who assaulted their classmate were suspended from Dai Dong Secondary School for four days, from October 20-24, in accordance with regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training .

Mr. Dực said that Kiên was smaller than his peers and came from a disadvantaged family. The principal observed that Kiên was well-behaved, somewhat quiet and shy, while the students who beat him were usually mischievous, with two of them belonging to a group of troublemakers. When beaten, Kiên usually didn't tell anyone, continuing to play with the group of friends who had beaten him, so the number of times he was beaten could be more than twice the number the school knew about.

"We are deeply saddened. The school has asked the families of the students involved to take responsibility for the victim, and has also reported the incident to the police and higher authorities. Teachers have also donated to help cover the child's medical expenses," Mr. Duc said.

The incident is currently under investigation by the authorities. Regarding the school's response, Mr. Dực stated that they will strengthen student education to prevent such incidents from recurring.

In August, the Ministry of Education and Training acknowledged that school violence is one of the persistent problems in the sector, estimating that nearly 7,100 students were involved in 2022. According to current regulations, disciplinary action against students who violate rules includes three forms: warning, reprimand, and temporary suspension from school.
