According to CNN , a senior US government official announced that the country will not participate in Israel's military operations against Iran. Tel Aviv informed Washington shortly before the attack began.

"We understand that Israel is conducting a planned attack on military targets in Iran as an act of self-defense and in response to Iran's ballistic missile attack on Israel on October 1," US National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett said in a statement on October 25 (US time).

President Joe Biden is currently in Wilmington, Delaware, and his advisers are not scheduled to meet in the Situation Room. However, Biden has been briefed on the attacks and is closely monitoring developments.

On the morning of October 26 (local time), the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that its military carried out "precision strikes on military targets" in Iran, although it is still unclear which specific targets were located.

According to Reuters , several loud explosions were heard in the Iranian capital Tehran in the early morning of October 26. There were no reports of damage at Iranian military bases in the area. Iranian media reported that there was no fire or explosion at a major oil refinery in Tehran.

In recent weeks, senior US officials have made clear that Israel’s response — both in nature and in the sites targeted — must avoid over-escalation or impact on the global economy.

President Biden and his top national security advisers, in a series of regular discussions, stressed they do not support attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities or oil reserves.

While US officials believe other oil producers could easily make up for the roughly 1 million barrels a day Iran produces, they are concerned that the anxiety over the attack could send energy prices soaring around the world.

“Sentiment is more important than reality,” the unnamed source told CNN , citing that the proposal to attack Iranian oil facilities alone caused market prices to rise more than 4%.

According to CNN , Israeli officials assured the US that the target of the response was military assets - not nuclear or oil sites - after the Biden administration raised concerns about further provocations and domestic consequences.

An Israeli official insisted that the country would not attack Tehran's nuclear or oil facilities. "We only target military targets that have threatened Israel in the past or could threaten the country in the future."

Sirens sounded in Nahariya, northern Israel, a few kilometers from the border with Lebanon early on October 26, after Israel announced it had attacked military targets in Iran.
