Women make up more than half of the population, but for a long time they have been underrepresented when it comes to health research and the money spent on it. That is about to change today.

US President Joe Biden emphasized that in his speech on November 13 when announcing the Women's Health Research Initiative to overcome the lack of research in this field and improve the effectiveness of disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment for women.

The White House statement stated that women have not received adequate attention for a long time, leading to gaps in research and causing serious consequences for women's health across the United States.

Years of research shortcomings have led to not enough work being done to address women's unique ailments, such as severe migraines, undetected heart disease symptoms and the debilitating effects of menopause, according to First Lady Jill Biden.

That's why the Women's Health Research Initiative aims to "galvanize" the federal government as well as the private and philanthropic sectors in an effort to "spur innovation, unleash transformative investments to close the research gap and improve women's health."

“We have a clear goal: to fundamentally change the way we approach and fund women's health research,” First Lady Jill Biden said.

The initiative will be led and coordinated by First Lady Jill Biden and the White House Gender Policy Council, chaired by Dr. Carolyn Mazure, professor of psychiatry and psychology at Yale University. Members of the initiative will include federal agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense, White House offices, etc.

Within 45 days, members will recommend to the White House specific actions to advance women's health research and maximize government investments in the field, focusing on eliminating inequities that have led to "serious health consequences for women across the country."
