KYODO. The death toll from a series of earthquakes in Japan's Ishikawa prefecture has risen to 81 , with about 50 people still missing as many areas are running out of food and water.

JAPAN TIMES. Japan Airlines estimates damage of about 15 billion yen ( $1.04 million ) in the collision between its Airbus A350 and a Japan Coast Guard plane at Haneda airport.

YONHAP. ​​South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Chung Byung-won and his counterparts Daniel Kritenbrink (US) and Yasuhiro Kobe (Japan) attend the first meeting of the trilateral dialogue on the Indo-Pacific today, January 5 in Washington DC.

KUNA. Kuwait's new King Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah appointed Sheikh Mohammed Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah , 68, as Prime Minister of the country.

AP. Argentina's National Labor Court has suspended a labor reform bill proposed by the government of new President Javier Milei last month.

BLOOMBERG. Venezuela's oil exports are set to rise 12% in 2023 to nearly 700,000 barrels per day as the United States eases sanctions on the country's energy sector since 2019.

Africa

XINHUA. Algeria and Sierra Leone affirmed their commitment to close cooperation to maintain international peace and security in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.
