According to The Hill , during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin confirmed that Washington will soon announce a new security assistance package worth $2.3 billion for Kiev, including air defense systems, anti-tank weapons and important ammunition.
Stating that the weapons were taken from the US military's reserves, the Pentagon chief affirmed that the new aid package "will also allow the US to purchase additional Patriot and NASAMS air defense missiles, which will be provided on an expedited schedule."
In addition, Washington “will take steps to build a bridge towards NATO membership for Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, Reuters news agency quoted an unnamed senior US State Department official as saying that Kiev would receive “good news” in its efforts to acquire additional air defense systems at the NATO summit in Washington next week. However, the official did not provide further details.
Ukrainian officials have recently urged allies to provide more air defense systems to counter frequent missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks by Russian forces.
According to plan, NATO leaders will gather to attend the bloc's Summit in Washington (USA) from July 9-11.
Also related to Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed the important requirement for Europe to maintain military support for Kiev, in the context of Ukrainian forces trying to prevent Russian attacks across the front line.
Speaking at a press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, President Zelensky stated: “The most important requirement for all of us in Europe is that European support for Ukraine remains at a sufficient level, including protecting us from Russia.”
