The US State Department said the meeting took place on the sidelines of the annual Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD), with the participation of US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Jung Pak, Director of the Korean Foreign Ministry's North Korea Nuclear Affairs Bureau Lee Jun-il and Director of the Asian-Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Japanese Foreign Ministry Hiroyuki Namazu.
At the talks, top nuclear envoys from South Korea, the United States and Japan stressed the importance of maintaining close trilateral cooperation in resolving issues related to North Korea, including nuclear and missile issues, as well as deepening Moscow-Pyongyang military cooperation.
The United States, Japan and South Korea also stressed the importance of working together to promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, as well as restarting dialogue and diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang.
On the sidelines of NEACD, on the same day, Ms. Jung Pak also had talks with Chinese special envoy in charge of Korean Peninsula issues Liu Xiaoming, emphasizing that the US considers "diplomacy and dialogue" with North Korea as the only feasible method to achieve lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The meeting between the two US-China nuclear envoys followed a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Beijing in late April, during which the two sides agreed to maintain open lines of communication, despite differences on a range of thorny issues.
South Korea's special envoy for nuclear issues Lee Jun-il also held separate talks with Liu Xiaoming and Jung Pak on the sidelines of the NEACD.
The NEACD is an annual security dialogue forum that brings together government officials and civilian experts from South Korea, the United States, Russia, Japan, North Korea and China. However, it is unclear whether Russia and North Korea will attend the Tokyo-based forum. North Korea last attended the NEACD in 2016.
