Frigate Admiral Gorshkov during a visit to Cuba

Newsweek magazine on June 11 cited open source maritime and aviation data showing that US ships and planes appeared to have followed a group of Russian warships passing through the waters east of Florida (USA) to Cuba.

Open source intelligence analysts posted updates showing that the US Coast Guard cutter CG Stone, destroyers USS Truxtun and USS Donald Cook, along with the frigate HMCS Ville de Quebec, were sailing south off the coast of Florida, apparently tailing the Russian ships.

Meanwhile, a US Navy P-8A Poseidon spy plane appeared to be operating above.

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the group of four Russian warships visiting the country includes the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan, the supply ship Pashin and the rescue tug Nikolai Chiker.

The visit is seen as part of Moscow's response to NATO's deeper commitments to Ukraine, although the Pentagon said the scheduled visit "does not pose any direct threat to the United States".

The Cuban Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces said the Russian ships visited Cuba from June 12 to 17. The agency said none of the ships were equipped with nuclear weapons, so the visit to the Caribbean nation did not pose a threat to the region, The Guardian reported on June 7.

The Kazan submarine belongs to the Yasen-class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines of the Russian Navy, which entered service in 2021 and is deployed with the Northern Fleet.

Russia's plan to send troops to areas near US territory comes amid escalating tensions between Moscow and Washington over the situation in Ukraine, especially after the latest developments when the US and its Western allies allowed Kyiv to use weapons to attack Russian territory.

"What the West is doing is pushing them directly into a war against Russia and we have the right to act in a similar way," CNN quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying on June 5.

During the Cold War, Cuba was an ally of the former Soviet Union. The Soviet Union's placement of nuclear missiles in the Caribbean nation led to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, pushing Washington and Moscow to the brink of war.
