Many universities convert IELTS from 5.5 to English subject score when considering admission, but the conversion rate is not the same, ranging from 7.5-10.

More than 100 universities have announced their expected enrollment plans for 2024. Of these, about 50 schools use international language certificates such as IELTS for admission.

Methods related to this certificate are mainly priority admission or combined consideration (converting the certificate into English subject scores, combined with graduation exam scores or high school transcripts).

To date, more than 20 schools have announced IELTS score conversion rates. Technical schools often have higher conversion rates than economic schools.

For example, the University of Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City National University, accepts IELTS from 4.5, giving candidates with this certificate 8 points. If the candidate achieves IELTS 6.0, the candidate is considered 10 points in English. Hanoi University of Science and Technology or Electricity calculates 10 points in English for candidates with IELTS 6.5.

Meanwhile, the National Economics University only converts to 10 points for candidates with IELTS 7.5 or higher. Foreign Trade University or the University of Economics, Hanoi National University, calculates 10 points if candidates achieve IELTS 8.0 or higher.

The conversion of IELTS scores to English scores on a 10-point scale is as follows:

Some schools also convert IELTS scores but do not use the 10-point scale and have their own admission score calculation formula, such as the University of Commerce.

This school converts IELTS from 5.5 and above, equivalent to points from 8 to 12, then combines with high school graduation exam scores or transcripts of two subjects including Math and one of Literature, Physics, Chemistry. Admission scores are calculated according to the formula:

Admission score = [Math score + Literature/Physics/Chemistry score + Certificate conversion score*2]*30/44 + Priority score.

Schools such as the Cryptography Technical Academy and Hanoi Pedagogical University add no more than 3 priority points to candidates with IELTS certificates.

Meanwhile, Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment has special admission for candidates with IELTS 5.0 or higher. Vietnam Agricultural Academy considers combining high school transcripts with IELTS 5.0 or higher but does not convert.

International language certificates were included in the 2017 enrollment plan by some schools, and have gradually become more popular since 2018. From only economic schools, by 2023, about 100 schools, including technical, police, and medical schools, will use these certificates for admission consideration.

Many experts believe that IELTS or other international certificates comprehensively assess candidates' foreign language ability. Schools also evaluate successful candidates based on the admission method combined with "quality" certificates and good academic results.

In 2022, among more than 500,000 new students, the admission rate using international certificates (including IELTS) is 0.86%.
