Pig price does not fluctuate, not much difference
Mr. Ha Ngoc Thi (Cho Song, Nam Dinh) shared: For nearly a week now, the price of live pigs has begun to stabilize and the price between provinces is now very close, only differing by 1,000-2,000 VND, so there is no situation of live pigs being transported by traders from one region to another to sell for profit, so the epidemic is better controlled, the market is more stable.
“Previously, the price of live pigs between the South and the North differed by at least 5,000 VND/kg, so the trade of live pigs between regions was quite strong, causing an increase in livestock diseases, especially African swine fever. However, now that the price is stable, almost only localities lacking supply have to supplement pigs from other provinces,” Mr. Thi shared.
Mr. Nguyen Quang - a pork trader at lane 122 Mai Dich - Cau Giay (Hanoi) also shares the same opinion: Stable pig prices make pork prices at markets more even, making it easier for traders to sell.
A survey by Lao Dong showed that on April 6, 2024, the price of live pigs was stable at 58,000-61,000 VND/kg. Of which, all northern provinces sold at 60,000-61,000 VND/kg. In the central provinces, live pigs cost from 58,000-59,000 VND/kg. In the South, from 59,000-61,000 VND/kg.
Nationwide, the highest selling price of live pigs (61,000 VND/kg) is in Hung Yen, Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen, Dong Nai, Long An, Kien Giang, and Lam Dong.
The lowest pig price is in Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa.
Pork purchasing power decreased
Ms. Tran Thi Hong (Me Linh, Hanoi) said that for more than a week now, when the weather is hotter, pork sales have been very slow, so she has had to reduce the amount of goods to avoid excess and unsold products.
“On April 6, 2024, I reduced the number of pigs from 1 to 1/2, but sales were still very slow. Although the price of live pigs in Hanoi was over 60,000 VND/kg, and pork at the wholesale market was 90,000 VND/kg, I still did not dare to increase the retail price because purchasing power was very low,” Ms. Hong shared.
Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc, a pork trader at Quang Trung market (Vinh, Nghe An) also said that for more than a year now, pork trading at markets in the province has been very difficult because people are afraid of the epidemic and have reduced their pork consumption. Now that the price of live pigs has increased to 60,000 VND/kg, business is even more difficult.
“Unlike other localities, Nghe An has a long coastline so seafood is abundant, so consumers have many options when buying food. Although the Department of Animal Health informed 2 weeks ago that Nghe An province only had 3 outbreaks of African swine fever, the outbreaks have been isolated and handled, consumers are still afraid to buy pork, moreover, it is the hot summer so sales have decreased” - Mr. Ngoc said.
Although the price of live pigs has increased, purchasing power has decreased, so the price of pork at traditional markets remains quite stable, and sellers have not increased prices.
According to the Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), currently, the country has 6 outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the provinces of Dien Bien, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum and Gia Lai that have not passed 21 days; the number of infected cattle is 136, the number of dead and destroyed cattle is 8.
There are 35 outbreaks of African swine fever in 28 districts of 19 provinces and cities nationwide that have not passed 21 days. The number of infected pigs is 1,234, the number of dead and culled pigs is 1,189.
Hot weather and disease are factors that cause consumers to reduce their pork intake and increase other foods such as poultry, seafood, eggs, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Hanh - Owner of a pig farm in Phuc Lam commune, My Duc district (Hanoi) : Although "demand" has not increased, the supply has decreased a lot, so the price of live pigs in 2024 will be more stable than in 2023.
The price of 60,000 VND/kg is profitable, but small farms do not dare to re-herd because the price is unstable and disease pressure is still high.
