Summer 2024 will be exceptionally hot, with possible temperature records

The latest weather forecasts indicate that the summer of 2024 will be hotter and more intense than the average of many years in the same period. The average temperature across the country will generally be 0.5-1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has just released a weather forecast for June-August 2024. Accordingly, the heat wave in the Northern and Central regions is likely to increase during the period from the second half of May to July 2024. Heat waves and severe heat waves are likely to occur more frequently than the average of many years in the same period. From June to August 2024, the average temperature across the country will generally be 0.5-1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period.

Regarding the drought situation, experts predict that in the Central region, drought is likely to appear and last from the second half of May to August 2024.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting also forecasts that there will be about 03-05 storms/tropical depressions in the East Sea. Of these, about 01 storm will make landfall. There will continue to be the possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind across the country.

The rainy season in the Northern region appears similar to the average of many years (around May). The rainy season in the Central region is likely to appear similar to the average of many years (around the end of August and the first half of September). The rainy season in the Central Highlands and the Southern region is likely to start from the second half of May (appearing later than the average of many years); from June to August 2024, the Southwest monsoon tends to be stronger than average.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting also warns that tropical storms/depressions and the Southwest monsoon are likely to cause strong winds and large waves that could affect activities in the East Sea. The heat wave will affect daily life and production activities. In particular, the heat wave may become more severe in the second half of May-July 2024. In addition, heavy rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, and hail may negatively affect the production and daily life of communities in affected areas.

Besides, meteorological experts also commented that the flood season in 2024 is unlikely to come early on rivers and streams in the Northern region.

From June to August 2024, floods will occur on the rivers of the North, the peak water level on the main rivers in the North will be at alert level 1-2, small rivers and streams will be at alert level 2 to 3. Floods will commonly occur in the period of August 2024.

In the Central and Central Highlands regions, from the second half of May to August, on rivers from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh, Binh Thuan and the Central Highlands region, there were 3-5 floods and fluctuations; on other rivers in the Central region, water levels changed slowly.

In the Southern region, on the Dong Nai River, there is a possibility of 2-3 floods from June to August 2024.
