Buying too much food and clothes during Tet

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí12/02/2024

Ngoc Anh (Hanoi) regrets buying too much food during Tet. The refrigerator is full of familiar items such as meat jelly, ham, sausage, nem chua, sausage, lap xuong... and many kinds of fruit.

Food surplus happens every year during Tet, but Ngoc Anh has not learned from the experience. With the mentality of "Tet is only once a year, so just buy as much as you can", she always ends up with a surplus of food. After 3 days of Tet, there are quite a few dishes that have to be thrown away because the refrigerator is full. "It's really wasteful, and I haven't learned from it," she said.

In addition, she also bought a large amount of candy, nuts, and dried fruits to treat guests. However, the number of guests was too small, the amount of candy bought was too much, so the surplus continued to occur.

Not only food, many people say they feel wasteful because they buy too many clothes but during the 3 days of Tet they just stay at home and... sleep. No appointments, no meetings, clothes seem to be unused so over-shopping before Tet is wasteful.

Mai Trang spent nearly 3 million VND to buy 2 ao dai sets before Tet just because she saw everyone had new ao dai and she couldn't stand aside. However, Mai Trang said that because her family was small, Trang only spent about 2 hours on the first day of Tet to meet relatives, after that, she just stayed home to watch movies and sleep. Therefore, she didn't have a chance to wear new clothes.

"After Tet, who will wear ao dai anymore? I know it's a waste but I still buy it," Trang said sadly.

Spending too much money and spending without thinking during Tet is a common situation for many people. According to research by Mint - a website specializing in business - people tend to be urged to spend money during big holidays for the following reasons:

- People have the mentality of wanting to be like their friends so they shop excessively.

- People are more afraid of lack than of excess.

- Many people are "bribed" by discount signs during the holidays, leading to buying unnecessary items.

- People compromise with themselves that there are only a few holidays a year and this is the most important holiday so they allow themselves to spend lavishly without thinking.

However, the advice is to remember that impulsive shopping can easily leave you "broke" after Tet, causing consequences for personal finances. Therefore, experts advise consumers to be careful in spending instead of being wasteful during the holidays, especially Tet.
