Coach Ten Hag said after the 1-0 home win at Old Trafford: "Wolves played better offensively, but then we still knew how to win against our opponents. That's what we did: team spirit and the will to win. I'm satisfied with this."
Man Utd did not have a really convincing performance against Wolves, even having fewer shots than their opponents (Man Utd had 15 shots, 3 of which were on target while Wolves had 23 shots and 6 of which were on target) but still won thanks to a goal by centre-back Raphael Varane in the second half.
Man Utd's homepage also admitted that the home team was lucky when goalkeeper Andre Onana did not receive a red card for a foul on Sasa Kalajdzic and was not penalized even though VAR technology was checked.
Coach Ten Hag said: "I am really satisfied with this victory, because every match is a battle. It is all about starting the season in the best way. We know we have to fight to get points.
It wasn't a great performance but we fought to win. We had to find a way to win and that's what we showed."
However, the Dutch strategist admitted that Man Utd still have a lot of things to improve ahead if they want to compete for the Premier League title. The 53-year-old coach said: "We have made too many mistakes. That is not good. But we have just entered the season and will gradually improve.
When you make a mistake, it gives the opponent a chance to counterattack and be passive in the situation. Fortunately, the players played well together to handle the situation. The fact that we still kept a clean sheet says it all. Keeping a clean sheet at Old Trafford is very good. Now we have to try to play better."
Finally, talking about the controversial situation at the end of the match when goalkeeper Andre Onana was not given a red card after a tackle on Sasa Kalajdzic and Man Utd were lucky to avoid a penalty, coach Ten Hag said: "I think Andre Onana was really brave, he touched the ball before Sasa rushed in. I don't think Onana had any influence on the opponent's touch.
So VAR technology looked at it and supported us. We are happy with the score we got today."
