After a stellar first season since moving from Real Madrid, Raphael Varane has lost his starting place at United in recent weeks, which coach Erik ten Hag explained was a technical issue.
From England, there is a lot of information that Varane's defensive performance is no longer good and his physical condition is problematic, so MU is considering selling him in the winter transfer window.
According to the German version of Sky Sports , Bayern Munich are considering signing the French centre-back in January 2024, in a race with rivals Saudi Arabia.
Sky Sports sources said that MU did not set a price that was too high. The specific cost is estimated to be around 20-30 million Euros.
Bayern Munich's sporting department argued that this was a reasonable amount for an experienced centre-back with an impressive record, and who is only 30 years old.
Bayern Munich have already secured a Champions League knockout ticket and are currently second in the Bundesliga with an unbeaten record (Bayer Leverkusen are two points ahead).
To avoid risks in the tense period in early 2024, in the context of a fairly dense international competition schedule, the German football champion is looking to the winter market to strengthen the rather thin defense.
After the departure of Lucas Hernandez, who moved to PSG in the summer transfer window, the Bavarian team only has 3 top central defenders: Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Kim Min Jae.
De Ligt will be out of action until 2024 due to injury, forcing coach Thomas Tuchel to think about adding personnel. Strengthening the center-back in the January transfer window is a top priority.
However, the big obstacle in the negotiation process between Bayern Munich and Varane is salary. The French player currently receives an after-tax income of more than 20 million Euros per year (340,000 pounds/week, or 17.68 million pounds per year).
In case they cannot convince Varane to reduce his salary, Bayern Munich will turn to another target who is also playing in England.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Takehiro Tomiyasu, a versatile defender for Arsenal and the Japanese national team, is also a target that coach Thomas Tuchel is considering bringing to the Allianz Arena.
