On March 22, Mr. Vo Dinh Thoan, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Health, said that the department had issued an urgent document on strengthening measures to prevent influenza A H5.
The move was made after the health sector recorded a case of a student infected with avian influenza A H5.
A male student in Khanh Hoa infected with influenza A H5 is in a coma and is in serious condition.
Accordingly, patient BTĐ (21 years old, residing in Ninh Hoa town, a student at a university in Nha Trang city), started the disease on March 11, with symptoms of fever and mild cough. The patient bought medicine to take but the disease did not improve.
On March 15, the patient returned home and only had contact with his mother and sister. He then went to the Ninh Hoa Medical Center for a medical examination at Facility 2 and was diagnosed with acute pharyngitis and laryngitis/monitored for dengue fever and was recommended to be hospitalized. However, the patient did not agree, so he was prescribed medication for outpatient treatment.
After 1 day, the patient was very tired so he went to the Emergency Department, Ninh Hoa Regional General Hospital with a high fever, abdominal pain around the navel, loose stools, was diagnosed with intestinal infection, sepsis with warning signs and transferred to the Infectious Diseases Department for treatment. On March 17, the disease progressed seriously so patient D. was transferred to Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital for treatment and had his sample taken and sent to Pasteur Institute Nha Trang for testing.
On March 20, test results from the Pasteur Institute showed that the patient was positive for influenza A H5. Currently, the patient is in a serious condition, in a coma and is being transferred to the Khanh Hoa Provincial Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment.
As soon as the information was received, Khanh Hoa CDC approached, investigated, treated the case, and instructed the patient's family members on epidemic prevention measures. At the same time, a list of 14 staff members at the Provincial General Hospital and 6 staff members at the Tropical Diseases Hospital was made to monitor their health, disinfect examination and treatment areas, and transport vehicles. A list of 4 family members of the patient (mother, aunt, and sister) was made to monitor their health.
On March 21, Khanh Hoa CDC disinfected the patient's dormitory room and rooms in the dormitory where he was studying with Cloramin B; made a list of 6 roommates and 60 students in the same class with the patient to monitor their health. At the same time, 6 samples were taken from the patient's dormitory roommates for testing, the results were negative for influenza A H5.
People infected with influenza A H5 often have symptoms similar to those of the common flu and are accompanied by some more dangerous warning signs (within 2-5 days of being infected with the influenza A H5 virus). Specifically: sudden high fever above 38 degrees Celsius; chills, headache; chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat; sore throat, cough, often dry cough, cough with phlegm; muscle aches, fatigue. After only half a day, the symptoms of influenza A H5 become more severe, the patient may suffer from acute respiratory failure such as difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, pale skin, even body aches, and unconsciousness.
