Half Truth and the Laura Coffee Story

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương21/10/2024

Tung was shocked and sent me a video related to the brand Laura Coffee – a brand that many people trust and choose, founded by singer Nhat Kim Anh. Tung said: This product is being “exposed” for having carcinogenic substances.

I opened the 45-second video, posted by Tiktoker named “CEO Vuong Long” sent by Tung and watched it 3 times, consulted hundreds of comments under the video, then searched for information, asked a few experts, to see what is the sweetener 951 – Aspartame in the Laura Coffee product that is said to cause cancer?

Một nửa sự thật và chuyện Laura Coffee
Tiktoker “CEO Vuong Long” blurred information related to sweetener 951 – Aspartame to attack the Laura Coffee brand. Screenshot

With full information, I quoted the Western proverb to Tung: "Half a loaf of bread is still bread, but half a truth is not the truth."

The implication of this proverb is that when it comes to the truth, it must be accurate, complete information, not half-hearted. Because the nature of the truth is not like a loaf of bread.

A loaf of bread that is half lost is a loss of quantity, not quality. But for an event, if we only provide half the information as truth and the rest is embellished, fictional, then the listener may misunderstand the nature of the problem.

In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that the artificial sweetener Aspartame is classified as a “possibly carcinogenic to humans” substance. This information was announced on July 13, 2023, and is not new.

But in the carefully edited video, TikToker “CEO Vuong Long” only tells viewers half the truth. The other half is in the announcement, the World Health Organization (WHO) notes that this substance is safe if consumed within the recommended daily limit.

CNN reported at the time that although listing Aspartame as a "probably carcinogenic to humans" substance may sound alarming, it does not mean that drinking diet soda will cause cancer.

Meanwhile, according to Reuters news agency, more than 90 countries, including the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, have evaluated Aspartame and found it safe for humans and have approved its use.

In Vietnam, Circular 24/2019/TT-BYT of the Ministry of Health, regulating the management and use of food additives, allows the use of Aspartame in food within prescribed limits.

Thus, it can be affirmed that Aspartame is safe for humans if used in the correct dosage and Vietnamese law and many other countries allow the use of Aspartame in food.

It is unclear what is behind this incident. However, the fact that Tiktoker “CEO Vuong Long” gave ambiguous information, then accused the product of being harmful to consumers’ health and advised other Tiktokers to remove the video shows that the motive and purpose are not pure.

This incident also reminds me of the "stormy" year of the traditional fish sauce industry in 2016, but on a smaller scale.

At that time, a haphazard study suggested that traditional fish sauce was contaminated with arsenic. And immediately, fish sauce manufacturing businesses were severely affected when returned orders began to appear, and supermarkets began to remove traditional fish sauce products from their shelves.

Fortunately, scientists quickly confirmed that the arsenic in traditional fish sauce is organic arsenic, not harmful to the health of users.

Or most recently, the incident related to the products of Nui Tan Ba Vi Milk Joint Stock Company (Ba Vi district, Hanoi) - the unit providing milk products to tens of thousands of students in the two districts of Hoai Duc and Dan Phuong (Hanoi) was accused of poisoning students when used.

According to the report of the People's Committee of Hoai Duc and Dan Phuong districts, at the time of the incident, the two districts did not record any cases of food poisoning among students in schools that organized meals for boarding students.

The test results of two samples of fresh milk and yogurt of Nui Tan Ba Vi Milk Joint Stock Company at the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control announced a week ago showed that they met all criteria according to national standards QCVN 5-5:2010/BYT and 5-1:2010/BYT.

Although the matter has been resolved, the negative information related to the Nui Tan Ba Vi milk brand that was spread before, still created a sense of hesitation and anxiety among some parents, greatly affecting the brand and business.

Returning to the incident that is happening with the Laura Coffee brand, the company is currently consolidating its records and documents to bring the matter to court. Behaviors that show signs of violating the law, affecting the reputation of the brand and business, causing confusion for consumers, depending on the nature and severity, may be subject to administrative sanctions or criminal prosecution.

Through this incident, we also learn another lesson when using social networks, which is to filter and evaluate information fully and carefully, creating a shield to protect ourselves and our families from fake news and toxic news.
