Industrial shrimp farming is currently one of the production models that brings high economic value, helps increase people's income, and contributes significantly to the economic growth of Kien Luong district (Kien Giang province).
In recent times, Kien Luong has been implementing many solutions to develop the industrial shrimp industry commensurate with its existing potential.
Capital of industrial shrimp farming
Kien Luong is considered the capital of the industrial shrimp industry of Kien Giang province. The district's industrial shrimp accounts for 60.7% of the area and 66% of the industrial shrimp output of the whole province. In recent times, the situation of industrial shrimp farming in the district has developed quite rapidly and achieved quite high efficiency.
By the end of 2023, the industrial shrimp farming area of the whole district will reach 2,800 hectares with 120 farming households and 4 enterprises, with a total output of 28,892 tons.
The area of high-tech industrial shrimp farming reaches 884 hectares, with 65 households and 4 farming enterprises, with an average yield of 20 - 25 tons/ha/crop, output of 15,600 tons, contributing about 54% of the total industrial and semi-industrial shrimp farming output of the district in 2023.
To facilitate businesses and households in production, from 2017 to present, the district has focused on investing in completing the infrastructure system to serve the development of the shrimp industry.
Specifically, Kien Luong dredged 29 canals to supply water for aquaculture with a length of 37.5km; reinforced 2 embankments with a length of 110.34km; repaired 17 culverts, 2 embankments; invested about 22 billion VND for 54.77km of medium-voltage power lines and 12.32km of low-voltage power lines to serve industrial shrimp farming; ensuring sufficient electricity supply for aquaculture and seafood processing industry.
Farmers in Duong Hoa commune (Kien Luong) apply high technology to industrial shrimp farming to help bring high economic value.
The district coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province and related departments and branches to complete the infrastructure of the aquaculture area in Binh Tri commune.
The District Economic Department coordinates with the provincial functional departments to organize seminars, training courses, develop topics and projects, and replicate effective production models of intensive and super-intensive shrimp farming. From there, shrimp farming households have basically mastered the technical process, boldly applied science and technology to production, and efficiency has been increasingly improved.
Ms. Lam Ngoc Tuyet - owner of Khuyen Chi high-tech shrimp farm, Binh An commune (Kien Luong) said: "The farm has a production scale of 12 hectares, with 14 ponds raising high-tech white-leg shrimp in 2-3 stages. The annual shrimp output reaches 200 tons.
The industrial shrimp farming model brings quite high economic efficiency, shrimp farming businesses and households earn tens of billions of VND per crop.
However, the initial investment cost is quite large. For this profession to develop, businesses and industrial shrimp farming households really need support and facilitation from local authorities in accessing bank capital sources, as well as completing infrastructure in farming areas, limiting disease risks.
Sustainable shrimp farming solutions
Reality shows that industrial shrimp farming in Kien Luong district has developed but not commensurate with the local potential.
The speed of expanding the planned farming area is still slow, the area assigned to enterprises has not been exploited to its full design capacity; the financial resources of some enterprises are not strong enough to develop production.
Infrastructure for industrial shrimp farming has not been properly invested and there are not many policies to support effective production. On the other hand, the shrimp disease situation is increasingly complicated, occurring all year round, especially in industrial farming.
The prices of materials, food, medicine, and aquatic breeds are increasing, while the price of commercial shrimp has been low and has lasted for many years. Therefore, maintaining the high-tech industrial shrimp farming model is facing many difficulties.
According to Nguyen Huu Thanh, Head of Kien Luong District Economic Department, to achieve high efficiency and sustainability in developing industrial and semi-industrial shrimp farming, especially the super-intensive shrimp farming model, in the coming time, the district will invest in upgrading the power grid and irrigation systems, building concentrated farming areas, and separate water supply and drainage systems for farming areas.
The district promotes the transfer and application of advanced science and technology, encourages people to boldly apply science and technology in production, especially environmentally friendly and biosafe models.
Reorganize production in the direction of forming production groups such as super-intensive shrimp farming clusters, consolidate, improve and improve the quality of operations of cooperatives and cooperative groups in the direction of concentrated production to exchange experiences, help each other in production, avoid individual, fragmented and ineffective production.
Kien Luong creates favorable conditions for farmers to access bank capital to invest and reinvest in developing industrial shrimp farming; at the same time, mobilizes and encourages producers and suppliers of feed and veterinary medicine for aquatic products to directly invest in farming households...
