According to Mr. Vo Hong Thanh, lack of knowledge, science and technology, and lack of advanced technology have led to low fishing efficiency of fishermen.

This leads to the modest and unstable income of fishing workers, making young workers less interested in going offshore. The long-term solution is that the state needs to have specific policies and enough support to train in fishing, especially offshore fishing, to reassure fishermen and attract marine workers.

Good at housework and public affairs

In Quang Tri, fisherman Vo Hong Thanh (55 years old, residing in Quarter 5, Cua Viet Town, Gio Linh District) is a prestigious person. Not only enriching himself, Mr. Thanh also participates in protecting security at sea, contributing to preserving the sovereignty of the country's sea and islands. Because of these great contributions, Mr. Thanh was honored as Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer 2024.

Receiving us on the fishing boat with license plate QT.91019.TS anchored at Cua Viet port, Mr. Thanh said that he started becoming a fisherman when he was 16 years old. After many years of being a boatman, he saved up and borrowed money to buy a large 400CV boat to go far out to sea. Each of Mr. Thanh's offshore fishing trips for mackerel last from 10 to 15 days, with 8 to 10 crew members on board.

In the past 5 years, if the weather is favorable, Mr. Thanh can make 15 to 20 sea trips each year. After deducting expenses, the net profit is 1 billion VND, the crew's income is from 7 to 10 million VND per sea trip.

Not only does going offshore to earn a high income for himself, Mr. Thanh is also active in protecting security and order, and preserving sovereignty over seas and islands.

As a member of the boat self-management team in Ward 5, Cua Viet town, Mr. Thanh both fishes and provides information to the border guards about the situation at sea, especially the situation of foreign ships violating Vietnam's waters.

In addition, the self-managed boat team also supports each other and coordinates with functional forces in search and rescue at sea. Not only that, the boats in the self-managed team also share fishing grounds to fish together. Mr. Thanh has participated in many rescues, rescues, and towed fishing boats in distress to shore safely.

Not stopping there, Mr. Thanh also actively contributes to his hometown with practical actions. When someone is sick and needs money for treatment, Mr. Thanh is always willing to lend. Every year, Mr. Thanh helps poor farmers borrow from 200 million to 300 million VND without interest to develop production. Mr. Thanh also contributes and supports 40 million VND to build a 200-meter concrete road in the town where he lives.

Need vocational training for fishermen

With 39 years of experience in offshore fishing, Mr. Thanh said that the State has invested in the exploitation of aquatic and marine products by issuing Decree 67. Thanks to that, many fishermen have capital to build large ships with modern equipment.

However, to operate a large ship effectively requires workers to have knowledge and scientific fishing skills. However, the biggest difficulty for every ship owner today is the lack of seafaring workers, especially high-quality workers.

According to fisherman Vo Hong Thanh, when trained, fishing scientifically and with high economic efficiency will attract workers to go to sea, solving the problem of labor shortage. Photo: Ngoc Vu.

Currently, seafarers are mainly elderly, lacking knowledge, not applying science and technology to fishing, so their income is not high. Looking at that, the younger generation does not want to follow the seafaring profession but chooses other jobs.

"Currently, fishermen are mainly elderly people, fishing based on the experience passed down from their ancestors, without training, so the efficiency is not high. Most fishermen catch fish of the wrong size, leading to depletion of seafood resources, and unprofessional preservation, leading to low quality fish and reduced value" - Mr. Thanh gave an example.

Therefore, Mr. Thanh recommended that relevant levels and sectors research and have policies to support training fishermen to operate modern fishing equipment and catch aquatic and marine products scientifically. When fishing is done scientifically, aquatic and marine resources will be revived, thereby increasing output, quality and value of catches, leading to higher income for fishermen, attracting workers to go to sea, contributing to protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
