Specifically, at around 9:00 a.m. on March 22, fishermen from Xuan Hoa fishing village, Quang Xuan commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) went to sea to catch a dolphin about 2 meters long and weighing about 40 kg, then docked at Roon estuary, Canh Duong commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) to butcher and sell.
When seeing dolphins, many boat owners and fishermen in this commune mobilized fishermen to buy them and release them back into the natural environment.
Fishermen in Canh Duong commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) release dolphins back into the sea.
According to the belief of fishermen in Canh Duong commune, if dolphins appear in a certain sea area, that area will have good luck all year. Fishermen will hold a ceremony to pray for peace and find ways to bring dolphins back to sea.
In particular, no one in the village is allowed to kill or sell dolphins. If a dolphin washes ashore and is no longer alive, the fishermen take it to the fish cemetery for a burial ceremony.
"The last time dolphins appeared in Canh Duong fishing village was nearly 10 years ago. Fortunately, right after the 380th anniversary of the village and the New Year's fishing ceremony in 2024, fishermen in Canh Duong and neighboring communes had a big catch of fish and anchovies, bringing in quite high incomes for fishermen right from the first fishing trips of the year," said Mr. Dong Vinh Quang - Chairman of Canh Duong Commune People's Committee.
