The first high school in the liberated zone
In 1973, after the Paris Agreement on the Restoration of Peace in Vietnam, Quang Tri became the capital of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. In the context of the new liberation, the government and people faced many difficulties, but the province still focused on developing education. A new school system was established, with 15 primary schools, 3 supplementary schools, 4 junior high schools and 1 teacher training school. Due to the need to train workers with a baccalaureate degree or higher, preparing human resources for the reconstruction of the homeland, Quang Tri Secondary School was established according to the Decision of the Chairman of the Revolutionary People's Committee of Quang Tri Province, on September 17, 1973. This was the first secondary school in the liberated area of the South.

Opening in poverty
Quang Tri was devastated and ruined by war. In that context, Quang Tri Secondary School faced many difficulties and shortages: no school building, no students, not enough teachers, and the most difficult thing was that the educational program had not been defined.
The teaching staff at the beginning consisted of only 7 people, including Principal Le Quang Van, teachers Le Ngoc Minh, Le Trong Lu, Nguyen Xuan Lan, Nguyen Quang Kha, Nguyen Phuc Liem and teacher Phan Thi Luong; later, teachers Le Dinh Chuong and Nguyen Khac Hieu were added. The teachers worked day and night, with the spirit of "We must repay our debt to our homeland", as the principal encouraged.
With the consent of authorities at all levels, on the afternoon of November 11, 1973, the school solemnly held the opening ceremony of the first course, in the immense joy of teachers, students and people.

Overcoming difficulties with proud steps
Overcoming the destruction of war, teachers and students both studied and worked to build the school. By 1974, the new school was built, with 7 classrooms made of bamboo and thatch,
In September 1975, a new school was built on a hill supported by the working people of Bologna province (Italy), with 6 rows of corrugated iron houses and 1 auditorium, still littered with barbed wire, bunkers and bomb craters. Quang Tri Secondary School in the period 1973-1975 was a symbol of the new vitality of the revolutionary government.
During the period 1976 - 1989, the three provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien were merged into Binh Tri Thien province. The school was named Dong Ha High School and became a key school of the province. The school's annual high school graduation results reached nearly 100%, including a class with 100% passing the university entrance exam, with 2 students winning national prizes in literature.
From 1989 to present, the school changed its name to Dong Ha High School.
Over the past 50 years, Dong Ha High School has trained more than 23,000 students. The school has been awarded the Third Class Labor Medal (2003), Second Class (2008), First Class (2013) and many other noble awards by the President.
Flexible and creative teaching, the only school with two educational systems
To improve the quality of education, not only based on competition for good teaching and good learning, the school always builds creative teaching plans, giving students many choices.
During the period 1974 - 1977, Dong Ha High School was the only school in the country with 2 educational systems: 12-year system divided into 3 groups: group A (literature, history, geography), group C (math, physics) and group D (chemistry, biology) and 10-year system according to Northern education, with 2 different sets of textbooks.
During the period 1989 - 1994, the school took on the additional task of opening a specialized system (math, literature, physics, English) to train and foster excellent students, build a team, and create the premise for the establishment of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in 1994.
Many generations of students of Dong Ha High School are successful in life.
Self-study of teachers and students helps students succeed in the long term
During the period 1973 - 1982, the teaching staff of the main school in the North supported, when they returned to the school to teach the 12-year program, much higher than the 10-year program. This was very difficult for the teachers, because they were not trained, lacked materials, especially for the subjects of math, physics, chemistry, biology, and English. However, with their dedication to the profession, the teachers self-studied, self-researched, and exchanged expertise, meeting the requirements of the 12-year program. Some teachers who taught in the South before 1975 continuously studied, integrated, and some later became high school principals such as Mr. Nguyen Dang Hau and Mr. Le Thanh Tri.
On the student side, many generations have built the tradition of "Studying hard, working hard, and striving for progress" . Many poor students from the countryside of Cam Lo, Gio Linh, and Trieu Phong have to stay at home to study, have a difficult life, are hungry, lack clothes, and have to take care of their own food, but are still determined to study and pass the university entrance exam.
It is from the school's flexible teaching, students have many courses to choose from, mainly self-study, absolutely no extra classes, has nurtured students' ambitions and dreams, thanks to which many students later succeeded in many fields, becoming professors and doctors such as: Professor - Dr. Nguyen Van Minh, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education; Dr. Truong Van Phuoc, former General Director of Eximbank; Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; Associate Professor - Dr. Le Anh Phuong, Director of Hue University; Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Standing Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of the Dong Ha City Party Committee; Nguyen Tran Dieu Thuy, who overcame difficulties to go to school and became a pilot at the age of 30 or 9X artist Dinh Van Tam, famous for his statues of tigers and cats in Quang Tri...
Master Ta Thi Thu Hien, the current principal of the school, said that Dong Ha High School is focusing all resources to build the school to achieve level 3 quality accreditation, a comprehensive high school, closely linked to real life.
