On January 10, Moroccan Ambassador to Geneva Omar Zniber was elected President of the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2024.

In a secret ballot among member states, Mr Zniber won 30 votes, beating South African Ambassador Mxolisi Nkosi, who received 17. This year it was Africa’s turn to chair the UN’s top human rights body, but African countries could not agree on a single candidate among the 13 council members – forcing a rare secret ballot.

According to the Human Rights Council's statement after the vote, the Moroccan ambassador stressed that the council's work "is very important and fundamental, which is to promote, respect and ensure universally recognized human rights".

Morocco's Foreign Ministry said it had "seen strong signals from the international community showing support for Morocco's constructive approach and leading role on key topics such as inter-religious dialogue, tolerance and the fight against racial hatred, the right to a healthy and sustainable living environment, the rights of migrants and the impact of new technologies".

The UN Human Rights Council was established in 2006 to protect and promote human rights worldwide and address violations. The presidency of the body rotates annually among five regional groups.
