With the consent of the Vietnamese Government, the US Navy fleet including the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, the cruiser USS Lake Champlain and the destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer arrived at Tien Sa Port, Da Nang to visit Vietnam from March 5 to 9.
The welcoming ceremony at Tien Sa Port included representatives of the leaders of the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Foreign Affairs - Ministry of National Defense , the Command of Naval Region 3; representatives of the US Embassy in Vietnam, the US Defense Attaché and a number of US functional agencies in Vietnam.
Immediately after the welcoming ceremony, Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs of Da Nang Lam Quang Minh and Vice Admiral Philip G. Sawyer, Commander of the 7th Fleet, US Navy co-chaired a press conference to introduce the program and content of the visit of the Delegation in Da Nang and answered some questions from Vietnamese and international reporters related to the visit of the Delegation.
At the press conference, Mr. Lam Quang Minh, Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs of Da Nang affirmed: The visit of the US Navy Ship is very meaningful for Da Nang city after the recent APEC event. This is an opportunity to promote and attract investment, trade and tourism for the locality in the coming time. At the same time, it affirms the capacity to ensure logistics and technical support for military ships of Da Nang Port, as well as the role and position of the city in international cooperation and national defense. The sailors and their relatives staying at hotels and accommodation facilities is a great opportunity to promote the brand of Da Nang, a hospitable, friendly and developing city of the Central region and the whole country.
Admiral Philip G. Sawyer said that in terms of the two countries' common interests in the region, both countries have a common desire to enhance stability and peace in the region regarding freedom of navigation and international law. "In the future, we look forward to continuing to strengthen cooperation between the two navies on issues of mutual interest," said Admiral Philip G. Sawyer.
Vice Admiral Philip G. Sawyer and the ship commander then paid a courtesy visit to the Naval Region 3 Command and the leaders of Da Nang City. Rear Admiral Do Quoc Viet, Commander of Naval Region 3 and representatives of agencies and units of Naval Region 3 welcomed the delegation. At the meeting, the two sides discussed a number of issues of mutual interest.
During the visit, groups of officers and sailors participated in a number of community activities in Da Nang such as music performances, sports exchanges, visits and exchanges at SOS Children's Village, Agent Orange Victims Support Center, Social Protection Center, Mental Health Care Center, Orphanage Center in the city. Groups of officers and sailors also participated in professional and technical exchanges on electricity and water supply; disaster response support; fire prevention and fighting skills; healthcare; sailor training, etc.
The visit of the US Navy Ship contributes to further promoting the development of Vietnam-US relations in accordance with the framework of the Comprehensive Partnership and the agreement of the two countries' senior leaders; at the same time, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, security, technology, and cooperation in the region.
