India's hosting of the G20 this year will focus on highlighting the concerns of the developing world and New Delhi has proposed that the African Union (AU) become a permanent member of the forum.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that while speaking at the closing session of the B20 Business Forum, ahead of the G20 Summit in New Delhi next month.
“We have a vision of inclusiveness and with that vision, we have invited the AU to become a permanent member of the G20,” the Indian leader declared.
“When India assumed the G20 presidency in December last year, we were acutely aware that most of the global South would not be at the negotiating table when we met,” Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said earlier.
“This is important because the really pressing issues are the ones that they have to face… And India, being part of the global South itself, cannot stand by and let that happen,” India’s top diplomat said.
Therefore, an important part of India's strategy is to bring the AU into the G20 group.
Also at the B20 Forum, the head of the Indian government said that the country is the “solution” to all problems and holds an important position in creating an “efficient and reliable global supply chain” after the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Advocating a sustainable approach to business, Prime Minister Modi said global businesses should understand that sustainability itself is an opportunity and a business model. He noted that problems will be reduced when lifestyles and business practices become planet-friendly.
The B20 Business Forum is the G20's official dialogue forum with the global business community. Established in 2010, the B20 is one of the most prominent engagement groups within the G20, with companies and business organizations as members.
This year's event took place from August 25-27, with the participation of more than 1,500 delegates from 55 countries. The theme of the event was "RAISE - Responsible, Accelerated, Innovative, Sustainable and Equitable Enterprises".
Over the past three days, policymakers, business leaders and experts from around the world discussed topics such as building resilient supply chains, digital transformation, the debt crisis facing developing countries and how to achieve climate change goals.
The India B20 Communiqué includes 54 recommendations and 172 policy actions that will be submitted to the G20 governments.
